A one-week "Summer School on Methods and Applications of Small Angle Neutron Scattering, Reflectometry and Spin Echo” will be held from June 18 - June 23, 2012 at the NIST Center for Neutron Research. For information about this summer school please go to http://www.ncnr.nist.gov/summerschool/ss12/.

Note: this year the summer school will only cover topics in soft matter.
Immediately following the summer school, the American Conference on Neutron Scattering (ACNS) will be held at Georgetown University, Washington, DC from June 24-28, 2012. Summer school students who submit an abstract to the ACNS will be eligible for subsidizedhousing, reimbursement of the registration fee, and bus transportation to the conference. The ACNS encourages submission of abstracts on investigations that utilize or have the potential to utilize neutron techniques.
Abstract Deadline: April 2nd, 2012.
For additional information, please visit the ACNS conference website<http://www.mrs.org/acns-2012/>.

This school provides students an opportunity to learn about small angle neutron scattering (SANS), neutron reflectometry (NR), and neutron spin echo (NSE) at the NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR). These powerful experimental techniques are used by researchers who work in a broad variety of scientific disciplines to probe the microstructure of materials on length scales from 1-1000 nm and on time scales up to 100 ns. The NCNR is home to world-class SANS, USANS (Ultra Small Angle Neutron Scattering), NR, and NSEinstruments, which are available to all qualified researchers through the NCNR’s anonymous, peer review proposal system. This school focuses on hands-on experimental training in the use of SANS, USANS, NR, and NSE, while still providing a thorough theoretical overview of these measurement techniques. Applications of SANS, NR, and NSE will be illustrated using examples drawn from recent cutting-edge research in polymer science, complex fluids, microporous media, and more. The school will enable attendees to assess the applicability of the techniques to their own research and will provide technical information needed to prepare effective experiment proposals. The summer school is sponsored in part by the National Science Foundation, and limited support for graduate students, postdocs, and juniorfaculty will be available. Attendance will be limited to 32 participants, and only applicants from North American institutions will be accepted.

For further information and/or to apply, please visit the summer school website http://www.ncnr.nist.gov/summerschool/ss12. Early application is advised since attendance is strictly limited. Typically the applications received greatly exceed the maximum number of participants. Application Deadline: April 1st, 2012.
