Neutron Data Analysis Software Scientists

The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 24 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for 2,000 visiting scientists. The Neutron Data Analysis and Visualization Division (NDAV) of NScD, develops data reduction, analysis, and simulation software related to the science conducted on the instruments at SNS and HFIR.

NDAV invites applications for two positions as Data Analysis Software Scientists. These positions will be either permanent or three-year, fixed term, depending on level of experience. These scientists will be working on the development of data analysis and simulation software for the SNS in the areas of:


*              Software for the analysis of crystalline and disordered materials measured by neutron powder, single crystal, or total diffraction, involving techniques such as Rietveld structural refinement, pair distribution function (PDF) analysis and the modeling of diffuse scattering from disordered structures.

*              Software for the analysis and modeling of inelastic and quasi-elastic neutron scattering data taken in experiments on soft materials (biological, polymer etc.) utilizing the results from molecular dynamics simulations.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:


-      Works with other software scientists in the Neutron Data Analysis and Visualization Division to develop software for the scientific needs of the SNS and HFIR instruments;

-      Interacts with beam line scientists in NScD to provide analysis software support for the neutron scattering user programs at SNS and HFIR;

-      Interacts with research scientists from the Physical, Biological, and Computational Science Divisions at ORNL to develop data analysis software that enables multi-disciplinary use of the SNS and HFIR facilities at ORNL;

-      Actively participates in ongoing research activities and develop an independent collaborative research program demonstrating the capabilities of, and driving the further development of, the neutron scattering and computational facilities at ORNL;

-      Ensures compliance with environmental, safety, health, and quality program requirements;

-      Maintains a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of laboratory values and ethics


Qualifications Required:

A Ph.D. in either the Physical or Computational Sciences is required with experience in the development of software for the analysis of scientific data and/or the atomistic modeling/simulation of materials, preferably in relation to neutron or x-ray scattering experiments. Knowledge of at least one of the following is required: Python, C, C++, and/or FORTRAN programming languages. The candidate should be self-motivated and should have strong written and oral communication skills. The ability to work in a team environment within a multi-disciplinary team on technically- and scientifically-challenging problems is required.

QUALIFICATIONS DESIRED:

Experience working in a professional software development environment. Experience working with Open MP and MPI parallel programming methods, and the development of code for, and the use of, High Performance Computing resources.
