Research Engineer in Detector Electronics for Neutron Detection
The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Research Engineer in Detector Electronics for Neutron Detection.
Description of directorate/division
The Detector group is part of the Neutron Technology Division under the Science Directorate. The Neutron Technology Division provides the technological tools required for the design, construction and operation of the neutron instruments at the ESS. The detector group is currently focused on performing the necessary research and development for alternatives to He-3 detectors for neutron detection.
Description of main responsibilities
The successful candidate will provide electronics and data acquisition expertise for the detector group. This initially focuses upon gaseous detectors, with thin layers of Boron-10 as a converter material. ESS needs in terms of electronics channels are likely to be 1-2 orders of magnitude higher compared to the present generation of instruments at neutron sources, hence techniques used in other academic disciplines are expected to be adapted. The successful candidate will lead the effort in surveying, identifying and adapting existing electronics and data acquisition systems, in prototyping and testing appropriate electronics for specific instruments, and in defining standards for such equipment.
Qualifications
• PhD or Masters in physics, electronics or electronic engineering.
• Candidates with several years of relevant work experience are invited to apply.
• Prior experience with front-end electronics and data acquisition for detectors is required, in particular a demonstrated ability in designing, prototyping, commissioning and/or operating such equipment.
• Good programming and computing skills are a necessity.
• As this position will involve working closely withcollaborating institutes, a willingness to travel and to be able to work effectively in a team are essential.
• Experience of working in an international environment is essential.
• Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage.

What ESS can offer
• Opportunity to work in an international environment.
• A unique opportunity to be involved from an early stage, in the development of a world-leading center for materials research.
• Possibility for personal development.
• Relocation assistance, including family support and Swedish language course, is offered.

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.
Start date
The position is to be filled as soon as possible.

The European Spallation Source ESS AB will design, build and operate a multi-disciplinary, large-scale research infrastructure based on the world’s most powerful neutron source. ESS will provide scientists with unique and powerful neutron scattering instruments for the study of a large range of materials – from polymers and pharmaceuticals to membranes and molecules. The ESS project is partnered by 17 European countries, and hosted by Sweden and Denmark. The ESS will be built in Lund, Sweden, by a collaboration of European scientists and engineers. ESS is planned to produce the first neutrons by 2019. When the facility is in fulloperation 2025, ESS has around 450 employees.

ESS aim to ensure that staff are employed on the basis of ability and the requirements of the job, and that no applicant or employee receives less favorable treatment because of race, religion, ethnic origin, gender, sexual orientation or disability.
