The European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for "Head of European Spallation Source's Data Management and Software Center".

Description of organisation

The European Spallation Source (ESS), located in Lund, Sweden, aims to be the brightest source of neutrons for science and technology and will become operational by the end of this decade. The ESS plans to provide 22 state of the art neutron scattering instruments, addressing a wide range of scientific fields.

To harness the scientific potential of these instruments the ESS Data Management and Software Center (DMSC), located at the campus of the University of Copenhagen, is charged to provide cutting edge information technology infrastructure and software solutions for data analysis and visualization, scientific computations and data management. In addition, the DMSC is also charged with the development of systems control software for the ESS neutron instrumentation that is seamlessly integrated into the analysis and visualization systems. The DMSC will also act as the main interfaces between ESS and university groups active in scientific computations, physical modeling and theory, an activity that is important in order to best harness the science potential of the ESS neutron instruments.

Description of main responsibilities and qualifications

The ESS is seeking to appoint the Head of the ESS-DMSC Division. The successful candidate will report to the ESS Director for Science and will be responsible for founding this exciting and important Division of ESS.

The ideal candidate will have a background in scientific computing and be familiar with the computing and operational requirements of large-scale scientific facilities. The candidate must have excellent management skills and provide leadership and vision for the mission of the DMSC. The candidate will be expected to forge alliances and collaborations with other facilities and universities in order that the DMSC delivers on it’s mission.

The Head of the ESS DMSC will be working partly at ESS in Lund (Sweden) and partly at ESS DMSC located at the Copenhagen University (Denmark).

The University is prepared to offer a contract as adjunct professor, given that the candidate has the required scientific background.

Experience of working in an international environment is essential.

Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage.
