        Postdoctoral Research Fellow

University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia
ANSTO / Bragg Institute, Sydney, Australia

**
*Salary Level A:* A$77K per year (plus 9% employer superannuation and
leave loading)
We are looking for a motivated Postdoctoral Research Fellow for one year
to be based at the Bragg Institute in Sydney (Dr. F. Klose) and at the
University of New South Wales in Sydney (A/Prof. C. Ulrich). The aim of
the project is the study of transition metal oxide superlattices like
unconventional superconductors or multiferroic materials by polarized
neutron reflectometry. Experiments will be mainly carried out at the new
reflectometer, /Platypus/ at the OPAL research reactor in Sydney. The
research program is related to thin magnetic films for applications in
future spin electronics or novel sensor devices.
Motivation: In recent years artificial multilayers consisting of
transition metal oxide based high temperature superconductors have
attracted much attention and opened a new field of research in condensed
matter physics. For example, the interplay between superconductivity and
ferromagnetism, two competing phenomena, can be studied systematically
by selectively designing multilayers consisting of two oxide materials
with these two competing properties. This has become possible due to
recent technological advances like the development of the method of
Pulsed Laser Deposition. Such a facility for thin film growth is
available at UNSW. Our research is aimed at studying the interplay
between superconducting and magnetic phenomena on the nanoscale
involving artificial magnetic structures.
*Experimental*
Collaborate with an international team of scientists and perform state
of the art experimental research at the Bragg Institute and other
science facilities:

  * Neutron reflectometry and diffraction to investigate structural and
magnetic properties of nanoscale thin films.
  * Use of complementary structural and magnetic methods (including
    magnetometry and X-ray/synchrotron methods).

*Your tasks*

  * Perform neutron scattering and complementary experiments at national
    and international research facilities.
  * Data analysis, interpretation and publication of experimental results.

*Your profile*

  * We are looking for a candidate with strong background condensed
matter physics. Experience as a user of large scale research
facilities like neutron sources or synchrotron rings would be an
    advantage.
  * Ability to work in an international team.

An applicant may be required to undergo pre-employment checks prior to
appointment to this role.
Applicants should address the selection criteria found within the
position description, in their online application.
