The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites applications for an Engineering Materials Group Leader in the Chemical and Engineering Materials Division (CEMD). With the world's most intense pulsed accelerator-based neutron source and the highest flux reactor-based neutron source (the High Flux Isotope Reactor), ORNL has become a world leading center for neutron science. Research at these facilities encompasses the physical, chemical, materials, biological, and medical sciences and will provide opportunities for up to 2,000 visiting researchers each year from industry, research facilities, and universities all over the world. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to: http://neutrons.ornl.gov.

The Engineering Materials Group Leader provides line management and scientific leadership supporting Group staff scientists, visiting scientists, and the user community. The successful candidate will make individual scientific contributions and lead staff efforts to advance research in science using neutrons in the area of advanced engineering materials structure, dynamics, and properties. The Engineering Materials Group directly supports user research using the engineering diffractometer (VULCAN) at SNS and residual stress, neutron imaging, and small-angle neutron scattering instruments at HFIR. The Engineering Materials Group Leader will work closely with group staff, Division and Directorate researchers and management, ORNL scientists and the user community to foster and advance research on engineering materials using the full range of neutron scattering capabilities supported by NScD.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

*      Lead the Engineering Materials Group support of user research on identified instruments, including further development of the user base and responsiveness to user priorities;

*      Contribute individual research toward solving problems in chemical sciences using neutron scattering;

* Support the scientific and career development of Group staff members and visiting scientists;.

*      Clearly communicate capabilities and research accomplishments with a broad and diverse base of stakeholders;

*      Execute line management responsibilities including supervision of group staff and the development and execution of NScD budget and business plans;

*      Represent the Group before review committees, advisory committees, and visitors; and at conferences, workshops, invited talks/lectures, and technical meetings;

*      Serve as a member of external review teams, editorial boards, advisory committees, and/or conference organizing committees;

*      Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics in the work environment;

* Ensure compliance with, and leadership for, environmental, safety, health, and quality program requirements.

Qualifications Required:

Minimum Qualifications:
The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in an appropriate science subject with at least 5 years of experience working on forefront problems in engineering-materials sciences using scattering techniques. It is expected that the candidate has the experience and vision needed to support the scientific direction and career development of group staff and the needs of a growing user community. The successful candidate must have demonstrated ability to work with a broad spectrum of people in a research environment. Candidates must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and enjoy working in a team environment, with the collaboration of all levels, disciplines, and diverse cultural backgrounds of the organization.

Qualifications Desired:
A Ph.D. in a related field and 10+ years of related experience.
Experience in supporting user research at major facilities is highly desirable.
Experience in leading and managing research and development teams is highly desirable.

Work Direction and Interfaces: Reports to the Director of the Chemical and Engineering Materials Division. Communicates effectively with group staff, users, and Division and Directorate management to support and advance neutron scattering science within the Group.

Authority/Approval Levels: Provides work direction to group staff for technical systems and operations. May represent the Division Director in his/her absence. Defined procurement authority, absence approval, travel, etc. based on position.
