Dear colleagues,

The HZB user coordination kindly invites you to submit proposals for the next joint proposal
round for our large scale facilities BESSY II and BER II with beam time being allocated in the
second semester of 2014.

THE DEADLINE FOR PROPOSAL SUBMISSION IS March 1, 2014, 23:59 (CET).

http://www.helmholtz-berlin.de/user/beamtime/proposals/index_en.html

This deadline is strict! Do not count on a "dead deadline"!

The up-coming proposal submission will be organized with our user office system GATE https://www.helmholtz-berlin.de/pubbin/hzbgate
You need a valid GATE account in order to submit a proposal. Please note: The old accounts (BOAT, BENSC Visitors Club) are not valid for GATE.

You will find more information in the "Guidelines for Proposal Submission" which are available
in the online help (more info>>

http://www.helmholtz-berlin.de/user/beamtime/guide_en.html).

For details on available instruments in 2014/II please refer to the "Instruments on schedule"
section of the on-line Call for proposal http://www.helmholtz-berlin.de/user/beamtime/proposals/index_en.html#c182922

General information on beamtime and access to HZB is given at: http://www.helmholtz-berlin.de/user/beamtime/index_en.html

********************************************************************
Users of our neutron facility BER II please find the most relevant and partially new information as summarized below:

The application period 2nd semester 2014 covers the months September 2014 to February 2015. Due to scheduled
maintenance work at the BER II reactor no reactor operation is foreseen in September and October 2014.

Details on the instrumentation and coordinates of the instrument scientists are available on the webpages

http://www.helmholtz-berlin.de/user/experimental-infrastructures/instruments-neutrons/index_en.html

 Instruments:

- The new Laue diffractometer FALCON is ready for friendly users. Please contact the instrument scientist before
applying for beamtime.

- The Membrane Diffractometer V1, the 4-circle Diffractometer E5 and the Focusing Powder Diffractometer E6 are
no longer available from 2014/II on.

********************************************************************
Users of our synchrotron facility BESSY II please find the most relevant and partially new information
as summarized below:

The application period 2nd semester 2014 covers the months August (4th) 2014 to February (15th ) 2015
with 14 weeks of Multi Bunch, 1 week of Single Bunch and 1 week of low-alpha operation.

To specify preferred and/or inconvenient beamtime periods in the technical section of your application,
please follow the link to the BESSY II operation calendar 2014 on our web-page
http://www.helmholtz-berlin.de/user/index_de.html or go directly to
http://www.helmholtz-berlin.de/media/media/nutzerdienst/User_info/Schedules/bessy2/operationschedule2014.pdf

Top-up and Radiation Safety Requirements:

Since BESSY II is operated in TOP-UP mode, radiation safety regulations forced us to install a CONTROLLED AREA in
the BESSY II experimental hall. Therefore all users have to fulfill more stringent radiation safety requirements. For details
read the Radiation Safety requirements pages! You will find them online here:
http://www.helmholtz-berlin.de/user/user-info/safety/radiation-protection/bessyregulation/from-august-1-2012_en.html

Beamlines and experimental stations:

- The new KMC-3 beamline is in operation, if you are interested in performing experiments there, please contact
the beamline scientists for advice. http://www.helmholtz-berlin.de/pubbin/igama_output?modus=einzel&sprache=en&gid=1847&typoid=35512

- The Beamline TGM7 is no longer available in 2014.

- Due to the relocation of the U41 -XM, the use of this beamline is limited to the first few weeks in the up-coming
semester.

- UE52-PGM: this beamline will be upgraded and the Endstation MultiColour PES will be replaced: Therefore the
beamtime will be limited to experiments at the open port and to 6 weeks of beamtime. Please contact the beamline
scientists for details http://www.helmholtz-berlin.de/pubbin/igama_output?modus=einzel&sprache=en&gid=1640&typoid=35512

http://www.helmholtz-berlin.de/pubbin/igama_output?modus=einzel&sprache=en&gid=1894&typoid=35517

- An up-grade of the Nanocluster Trap limits the available time at this experiment.
http://www.helmholtz-berlin.de/pubbin/igama_output?modus=einzel&sprache=en&gid=1848&typoid=35517

- The SurICat is no longer in use and is replaced by the RAC-ARTOF at the optics beamline.

- The application for beamtime at the beamlines 7T-MPW-EDDI, 7T-MPW-MAGS/SAXS will not be possible in this
proposal round due to a delay in reinstallation of the 7T-MPW.

If you plan to apply for an experimental station of a partner group or a BESSY II-station, please make sure to discuss the
technical possibilities in advance with the corresponding station manager. Please find the contact data of your beamline
scientist and/or station manager in our instrument database IGAMA:

********************************************************************
Travel support for European groups:

The European programs CALIPSO (for BESSY II applications) and NMI3-II (for BER II applications) will be available within 2014.
All reimbursements of costs for European users are done according to the general rules of HZB. Detailed information can be
found at

http://www.helmholtz-berlin.de/user/user-info/eu-access/index_en.html

For Macromolecular Crystallography and biological X-Ray Microscopy the EU-access program BioStruct-X was recently
launched for support of scientists in molecular biology to get free access to participating large scale facilities in Europe

http://www.helmholtz-berlin.de/user/user-info/eu-access/index_en.html

European users with a granted BioStruct-X proposal are eligible for funding of their beamtime at BESSY II by these programs.

Travel Support for German University groups:

Limited funds are available to assist with travel and subsistence expenses for German University groups who cannot finance
these costs from their institutes' budget. Support will be granted on the basis of individual applications. In general only two
persons (BESSY II) / one person (BER II) per beamtime campaign can be supported.

http://www.helmholtz-berlin.de/user/user-info/travel_en.html

Arrangements for travel support have to be cleared prior to undertaking the trip.

Beamtime fees for Proprietary Research:

Beamtime fees are collected for proprietary industrial research. Academic users can use the BESSY II / BER II services without
paying any fees. The readiness to publish the scientific results within a reasonable period of time giving proper mention to
the HZB is a prerequisite for the charge-free admission of external users.

In case of any question, suggestions or problems, please do not hesitate to contact us or our beamline or station scientists.

The HZB User Coordination
