Purpose

The Scattering and Thermophysics Group in the Materials Science and Technology (MST) Division at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) (www.ornl.gov) is seeking a highly qualified candidate to fill a postdoctoral position. The position will support science programs funded by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Basic Energy Sciences, Materials Sciences and Engineering Division. The successful applicant will be expected to work effectively with scientists at neutron and x-ray scattering national user facilities such as the Spallation Neutron Source (ORNL) (http://www.ornl.gov/user-facilities/sns), the High Flux Isotope Reactor (ORNL) (http://neutrons.ornl.gov/facilities/HFIR/), and the Advanced Photon Source (Argonne National Laborotory) (http://www.aps.anl.gov). The general scientific focus will be on using measurements of the structure and dynamics of energy-related functional materials to elucidate the mechanisms underpinning useful energy conversion processes, such as electro-mechanical, thermo-mechanical, or thermoelectric.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

 *   Conduct neutron and x-ray scattering experiments (e.g., lattice dynamics, crystal structure, disorder and thermal diffuse scattering, data analysis, and some modeling).
 *   Work with others to maintain a high level of scientific productivity.
 *   Publish papers in key journals and present at key meetings.
 *   Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.
 *   Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.

Qualifications Required

PhD degree in materials science, physics, engineering, or closely related field. The ability to communicate in English to an international scientific audience is required. The incumbent must be motivated, safety conscious, and possess good interpersonal skills and oral and written communication skills. Possession of a record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences is required, as is the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and interact effectively with a broad range of colleagues. Candidate must have the ability to work independently.

QUALIFICATIONS DESIRED: Training and/or experience in neutron or x-ray scattering is desired with some understanding of the applications of materials theory being helpful.
In addition to these research responsibilities, the incumbent will interact regularly with senior scientists, program managers, and group members.

Applicants cannot have received the most recent degree more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment.

The initial appointment is a temporary full-time assignment not to exceed 24 months.

Position reports to Dr. Michael Manley (manleyme at ornl.gov) and the Scattering and Thermophysics group leader, MST Division. Interfaces with administrative staff, managers, and visitors to ORNL.
