DTU Physics at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) invites applications for a position as Professor or Professor (with special responsibilities) to conduct research and teaching in materials physics.

DTU Physics embraces research activities in a number of areas: biophysics and complex systems, catalysis for sustainable energy, experimental surface and nanomaterial physics, neutrons and x-rays for materials physics, plasma physics and fusion energy, theoretical atomic-scale physics, and quantum physics and information technology.

The Professor will be affiliated with the Section for Neutrons and x-rays for materials physics (NEXMAP), which is one of six sections in the Department. The section’s research is at the front line of neutron and x-ray based materials physics around the world. Notably within imaging, ultra-fast structural dynamics, correlated electron systems and advanced data analysis. The section is a key player in instrumentation and method development for synchrotrons, XFELs, and at neutron facilities, in particular at the European Spallation Source (ESS), as well as in scientific committees at international facilities.

The ideal candidate has a strong track record in state of the art experimental approaches, and will be dedicated to building an experimental and problem-driven research program using neutron scattering as a primary technique. He/she would have a strong network at international large scale research infrastructures for neutron scattering and a clear talent for working in a collaborative international research environment.

Experience, documented productivity, and research emphasis within one or more of the following topics is considered relevant: Strongly correlated electron systems, magnetism, energy materials, and soft condensed matter.

Responsibilities and tasks
The Professor is expected to produce scientific results at a high international level and disseminate these in peer-reviewed publications and at international conferences.

Furthermore, the Professor is expected to take a central role in the continuing development of a strong group within studies of materials physics using neutron scattering, to establish and expand collaborations with international neutron scattering facilities, with other research groups in DTU Departments, and at other universities. The Professor should in particular focus on the development of the group as a primary collaborator and user of the upcoming ESS, which DTU considers as a high priority research facility.

The Professor will teach at BSc-, MSc-, and PhD-levels in Physics. He/she will develop, plan, carry out, and evaluate courses and supervise project students. The MSc and PhD courses are taught in English, whereas the BSc and Diploma studies are taught in Danish. The candidate is expected to master Danish within a reasonable time after being appointed.

A substantial part of the research at DTU Physics is based on external funding. Active participation in fundraising, as well as responsibilities for project management, and for building collaborations with industrial partners is expected.

A position as Professor with Special Responsibilities is held for a limited time period and involves all the usual duties associated with a full professorship, as well as fixed-term specific duties which will vary according to the research program.

Qualifications
The successful applicant must be an excellent and innovative scientist within materials physics. Particular emphasis will be put on the following qualification requirements:

  *   A high level of original scientific production at international level that has contributed to further development of the subject area in question
  *   Successful education and supervision experience at different levels
  *   Documented experience with the use of and collaboration with international research infrastructures, in particular neutron facilities
  *   Demonstrated research leadership and collaborative abilities
  *   Demonstrated ability to be innovative, for example through patent applications

Assessment
In the assessment of the candidates, consideration will be given to

  *   the ability to teach
  *   scientific production at international level, research potential and ability to lead and develop a research team
  *   the ability to promote and utilize research results
  *   experience with innovation activities
  *   an all-round experience basis, including international experience
  *   the ability to contribute to the development of the Department’s internal and external cooperation
  *   track record in attracting funding to the research area
  *   visions within the research area

For the specific position consideration will also be given to:

  *   the vision, provided by the candidate, for the development of the research field and for further developing the involvement with international research infrastructures, in particular the upcoming ESS, and for connecting the research to materials activities at DTU and elsewhere

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union. Starting date is summer 2014. The position as Professor is permanent.

The position as Professor with Special Responsibilities is available for a 5-year period and may be extended for up to 3 years more.
