Purpose
The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 24 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope production and neutron irradiation. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to: http://neutrons.ornl.gov.<http://neutrons.ornl.gov/>

Purpose:
The Engineering Diffraction Group in the Chemical and Engineering Materials Division (CEMD) has an immediate opening for a post-doctoral research associate. Applications are sought from highly creative and motivated individuals who will join an interdisciplinary team utilizing high spatial resolution diffraction capability at the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) to study the residual stresses in engineering materials and study in-situ the elastic response of materials under applied mechanical loading. The Neutron Residual Stress Facility (NRSF) instrument (beamline HB-2B) at HFIR has recently completed
extensive hardware and software upgrades. Additional information and specifications for this instrument may be found on the
ORNL Neutron Sciences website: http://neutrons.ornl.gov/nrsf2/.<http://neutrons.ornl.gov/nrsf2/>

Major Duties/Responsibilities

* Enhance and extend capabilities for measuring elastic strain distribution in engineering materials under mechanical loading
(tension, compression, and torsion)
* Assist or lead in developing and testing user-friendly data reduction and analysis software
* Conduct original research on mechanical properties of advanced engineering materials using NRSF and other instruments at HFIR/SNS
* Write and publish high quality scientific papers on this research
* Assist with local contact duties for external Users on NRSF with complementary scientific interests

Qualifications Required

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or closely related field to begin work. Must have experience in neutron and/or X-ray powder diffraction and computer analysis/programming. Must demonstrate strong written and oral communication skills. This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license, which requires U.S. Citizenship or
LPR (Lawful Permanent Residence).

* The duties of this position require certain health standards be met. Therefore, employment in this capacity is contingent
upon the results of a pre-employment physical exam and drug screen which must be administered and cleared before employment can begin.

Qualifications Desired:
Prior user or postdoctoral experience on engineering beamlines at neutron sources (CW or TOF). Experience in developing and using sample environment equipment, especially load frames.

This position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days after which it will close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or hired.

We accept Word(.doc, .docx), Excel(.xls, .xlsx), PowerPoint(.ppt, .pptx), Adobe(.pdf), Rich Text Format(.rtf), HTML(.htm,
.hmtl) and text files(.txt) up to 2MB in size. Resumes from third party vendors will not be accepted; these resumes will be deleted and the candidates submitted will not be considered for employment.

If you have trouble applying for a position, please email ORNLRecruiting at ornl.gov.<mailto:ORNLRecruiting at ornl.gov>

Notice: If the position requires a Security Clearance, reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10
CFR 707.4 will be conducted by the employer and a background investigation by the Federal government may be required to obtain an access authorization prior to employment and subsequent reinvestigations may be required.

If the position is covered by the Counterintelligence Evaluation Program regulations at 10 CFR 709, a counterintelligence evaluation may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination.

ORNL is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants, including individuals with disabilities and protected
veterans, are encouraged to apply. UT-Battelle is an E-Verify Employer.
