Opportunity at the NIST BT-8 Neutron Stress Diffractometer
The NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR) is a leading user facility for neutron scattering in the United States. Located in Gaithersburg near Washington, DC, the NCNR has 24 instruments serving the needs of hundreds of users from academia and industry every year. NCNR staff is constantly improving the experimental capabilities in order to meet and exceed world-class standards. A recent initiative aims to do just that for the neutron diffraction measurement of stress and strain benefiting research in engineering and materials science. The future instrument (MEED - Multi-Energy Engineering Diffractometer) aims to establish entirely new capabilities with a multi-wavelength neutron beam and specialized sample environments for the investigation of effects of multi-axial stresses. We are seeking a candidate to join this effort.
The successful applicant will participate in the development and design of instrument components, support the ongoing measurement program of neutron diffraction measurement of stresses in engineering components, and participate in research pertaining to sheet metal forming. The desirable skills necessary for such a diverse field of activities are materials and metallurgical engineering, mechanical engineering, and physics. A Ph.D. or M.S. level degree is an advantage but not a prerequisite.
Employment will be through the University of Maryland for an initial two-year term. The salary and benefits are competitive and depend upon qualifications. This announcement will remain open until the position has been filled.
Application, including a CV with a letter of interest and 3 reference contacts, should be directed to: Dr. Thomas Gnäupel-Herold (tg-h at nist.gov, tel. 301-975-5380).<mailto:tg-h at nist.gov>
