Purpose
The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 27 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences. HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope production and neutron irradiation. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to: http://neutrons.ornl.gov.<http://neutrons.ornl.gov/>

Purpose:
The Data Reduction and Visualization Team within the Scientific Data Analysis Group (SDAG) is responsible for developing reduction and analysis software in support of SNS and HFIR instruments. This work includes the Mantid Project and the Center for Accelerated Materials Modeling (CAMM). This position will contribute to the development, operation, and ongoing support of these projects. The position also offers freedom to research and develop new tools and techniques for data analysis, processing, reduction, and visualization of experimental, model, and simulation data.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

- Support the scientific mission of the SNS by designing, developing, and maintaining reliable software to facilitate neutron data analysis.
- Support the mission of the Scientific Data Analysis Group by providing data reduction and analysis solutions for our users.
- Provide documentation and user training for software. Maintain code in a central repository utilizing a version control system. Develop software using software engineering practices.
- Will be expected to participate in research programs that involve using their computational expertise in the analysis of results from materials studies with neutrons.
- Ensure and monitor compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements. Promptly identify ESH and QA issues and communicate them to project and division management, ESH and QA contacts, and/or subcontractor contacts as appropriate.
- Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.

Demonstrated experience in developing reliable and efficient collaborative software in a scientific environment. Must show a record of strong software development expertise and an understanding of
scientific data analysis. Demonstrated experience in multiple programming languages, including C/C++ and python.

Experience with software engineering practices of using version control, automated testing, and configuration control
management systems. Understanding of reliable software design practices, distributed software systems and computer networks. Ability to work and communicate effectively with teams of scientists, engineers, and technicians.

Qualifications Preferred:
- A PhD degree in computer science, physics or related field and 1 or more years of relevant experience.
- Experience developing software at a scattering user facility is preferred.
- Experience in materials research using scattering techniques is preferred.
- Experience contributing to open source projects is preferred.
- Experience with C++, Qt, and boost::python is preferred.
- Prefer a candidate with strong software development expertise and an understanding of scientific data analysis.

Work Directions and Interfaces

Position reports to Data Reduction and Visualization Team Leader. Works closely with members of Scientific Data Analysis Group and other members of the Neutron Data Analysis and Visualization Division, and interfaces with external scientific users and instrument scientists at SNS, HFIR, and other technical groups. Collaborates with software developers at other facilities and from the user community.
