Purpose
The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope production and neutron irradiation. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to: http://neutrons.ornl.gov.<http://neutrons.ornl.gov/>

Purpose:
The Superconducting Linac (SCL) systems technician will perform daily tasks relating to the central helium liquefier (CHL), SCL, and superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) facilities. Candidates are required to qualify as a system specialist for operating the CHL through the training program of the SCL Systems Group. Daily tasks will include cryomodule assembly and maintenance, operations and maintenance of helium refrigeration systems, operations and maintenance of superconducting cavity processing facilities, conducting qualification tests, and assisting engineering and scientific staff with research and development. Candidate will contribute to development and maintenance of documentation including but not limited to operating and maintenance procedures, assembly travelers, test results, and specifications. Candidate will assist engineers in analyzing, establishing, and communicating equipment needs, procedures, and results.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

- Under supervision of project staff, assembles, tests, certifies, and documents SNS SCL cryogenic components.
- Assists with component assembly and commissioning of the helium refrigerator, cryomodule, and superconducting radio frequency facility.
- Periodically serves as CHL System Specialist for CHL operation during day time or evening shift.
- Observe, document, and communicate designs, methods, materials, and equipment required for the operations, assembly, and development processes.
- Sets up and operates process and test equipment and apparatus
- Uses electronic and mechanical test and measurement equipment to verify system function and integrity; uses computers to collect, record, and analyze data for acceptance
- Develops and maintains documentation and procedures for fabricating, testing, and operating equipment
