[Neutron] Mechanical Engineer to European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden

The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Mechanical Engineer.

Description of directorate/division

The Neutron Chopper group is part of the Instrument Technologies Division within the Science Directorate. The division is dedicated to providing and supporting key components to construction and operation of the facilities scientific instruments. The chopper group will compose 8-10, engineers and technicians who are jointly responsible for the delivery of neutron choppers systems throughout the facility both during the current construction phase and during the facilities long operation phase. The groups activities are undertaken within the context of a international ESS scientific and technical collaboration with partners around Europe.

Description of main responsibilities

The engineer will lead and participate in small project teams of engineers and technicians executing both technology development and instrument construction projects. In the role of development engineer conducting chopper technologies development the principal activities will include;

  *   Designing and optimising novel new neutron chopper components and assemblies.
  *   Validating design choices and performance through analytical or computer simulations.
  *   Constructing prototype components or systems for proof of concept, component selection and performance testing.
  *   Participation in initiatives to ensure the safe operation, improve performance, reliability and maintainability of systems installed or under development.

In the role of 'work unit leader' and member of an Instrument construction project the principal activities will include;

  *   Leading and managing the Neutron chopper work unit.
  *   Establishing the requirements for Chopper systems is discussion with the lead Scientist and Engineer and producing technical specifications.
  *   Leading the design and optimisation of chopper systems to the requirements one or more instrument projects.
  *   Liaising with in-house and collaborating teams across Europe to develop solutions to requirements and supply challenges
  *   Managing the procurement and integration of chopper systems from multiple European commercial or Collaboration Institutional partners.
  *   Organising the test, installation and commissioning of equipment to instrument on the ESS site.
  *   Preparing technical and project documents including specifications, design concepts, work schedules and budgets

Qualifications

The nature of the position with development, project and equipment support roles requires someone polyvalent with both technical competence, and operational capacities and hands on experience.

Qualifications:

  *   A Degree or Masters in Mechatronic or Mechanical Engineering
  *   10+ years of experience in a engineering development environment.
  *   Experience of working in an international environment is essential.
  *   Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite.

The candidate should demonstrate;

  *   Extensive experience in the mechanical design of rotating machinery
  *   Experience of Rotor dynamic simulations
  *   Extensive experience of structural analysis of rotors using Finite analysis methods
  *   Experience of test and development of high speed rotating machinery
  *   Basic project management skills

In addition experience would be preferred of;

  *   Experience in the design of vacuum equipment
  *   Experience in the design of equipment in a radiation environment

Duration & Location
