The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor
(HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's
most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering
research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical
sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to:

Neutron detector technology has advanced significantly over the past decade to meet both the demands of modern neutron
scattering instruments and to address the shortage of 3He gas, the long-standing mainstay of many detector technologies.
Instruments built at the proposed SNS Second Target Station will place unprecedented demands on detector spatial
resolution and peak count rate performance requiring new solutions to neutron detection. NScD seeks a senior detector
scientist to build and lead a program developing solid state neutron detectors for neutron scattering and imaging applications.
The successful candidate is expected to integrate contributions from existing detector group scientific and technical staff, will
seek funding (internal and external) to support development activities, will build collaborations with domestic and international
partners including other neutron facilities, industry, and academia, and will contribute to a strategic vision for neutron
detectors at ORNL that leverages existing strengths in scintillation detectors and develops innovative technologies.

Major Duties/Responsibilities
* Responsible for identifying foundational research, technologies, and methods that have potential to address high
performance neutron detector requirements for applications at SNS and HFIR.
* Responsible for preparing and executing a strategy to develop and deploy new detectors that includes identifying
opportunities for collaboration within and external to ORNL that includes both domestic and international partners.
* Leads a team of scientific and technical staff.
* Actively seeks funding for detector research and development through proposals; seeking new sponsors and leveraging

Qualifications Required
PhD required in Materials Science, Physics, Nuclear Engineering or other science related field. Must have five to ten years
of experience in developing and deploying high performance particle or photon detectors. Must have a demonstrated ability
to lead the efforts of a team including both technical and scientific staff. Candidates must have excellent written and verbal
communication skills and enjoy working in a team environment, with contributors across a number of relevant disciplines and
diverse cultural backgrounds. Must be able to present technical information on neutron detectors to a variety of audiences.

Qualifications Desired:
Demonstrated experience and vision needed to advance the state of the art in neutron detectors. Previous experience with
developing strategies for detector development is preferred. Ability to collaborate and complete projects within a diverse
scientific and cultural research community is preferred. Previous experience with proposal writing is desired.

Work Directions and Interfaces
Reports to the ISD Group Leader for Instrument Methods and Technologies. Interfaces with facility instrument scientists and
stakeholders, partner laboratories and institutions, and staff in other ORNL divisions.
