Purpose
The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor
(HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's
most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering
research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical
sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to:
http://neutrons.ornl.gov.
Purpose:
The Cold Neutron Chopper Spectrometer (CNCS) located at the SNS is a high-resolution, direct-geometry, multi-chopper
inelastic spectrometer designed to operate at low incident energies (2 to 50 meV). A wide range of scientific problems,
ranging from complex and quantum fluids to magnetism, lattice dynamics in solids, and chemical spectroscopy, is being
addressed with experiments at CNCS. Two similar spectrometers are currently under consideration as instruments at the
proposed SNS Second Target Station (STS) at the SNS. The successful candidate will conduct scientific research, engage
in beamline operations at CNCS, and will be an active participant in developing the conceptual design of a new direct
geometry inelastic spectrometer for the STS. Full training will be given in all aspects of inelastic neutron scattering, including
beamline operation, data collection, data processing and simulation work.
Major Duties/Responsibilities
Responsible to conduct inelastic neutron scattering research.
* Responsible to participate in operations of the CNCS beam line and provide beam line support to a limited number of
users.
* The successful candidate will be part of the TOF Spectroscopy group in the Quantum Condensed Matter Division at ORNL
and will be expected to take part in all group activities, which include seminars and weekly meetings.
* The successful candidate will also be part of a growing team of instrument scientists and specialists developing conceptual
designs for STS instruments.
Qualifications Required
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. from an accredited institution, completed within the last 5 years, in Physics, Chemistry, Biology,
Materials Science, or another relevant field. Expertise in inelastic neutron scattering and data analysis is essential.
Candidates should be self-motivated, have good interpersonal, communication and presentation skills and a demonstrated
ability to interact effectively with colleagues at all levels. Must be able to work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team. The
position requires the ability to set priorities, multi-task and adapt to changing needs in a fast-paced environment.
Qualifications Desired:
Previous experience with simulation work - either theoretical models describing the object of scattering experiments, or
neutron scattering instrumentation in general - will be an asset
Work Directions and Interfaces
Receives work direction from the CNCS lead instrument scientist. Will interface with the CNCS instrument team, users of the
CNCS instrument, and with members of the STS instrument design team.
This position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days after which it will close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or
hired.
We accept Word(.doc, .docx), Excel(.xls, .xlsx), PowerPoint(.ppt, .pptx), Adobe(.pdf), Rich Text Format(.rtf), HTML(.htm,
.hmtl) and text files(.txt) up to 2MB in size. Resumes from third party vendors will not be accepted; these resumes will be
deleted and the candidates submitted will not be considered for employment.
If you have trouble applying for a position, please email ORNLRecruiting at ornl.gov<mailto:ORNLRecruiting at ornl.gov>.
Notice: If the position requires a Security Clearance, reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10
CFR 707.4 will be conducted by the employer and a background investigation by the Federal government may be required
to obtain an access authorization prior to employment and subsequent reinvestigations may be required.
If the position is covered by the Counterintelligence Evaluation Program regulations at 10 CFR 709, a counterintelligence
evaluation may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination.
ORNL is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants, including individuals with disabilities and protected
veterans, are encouraged to apply. UT-Battelle is an E-Verify Employer.
