E.2 Advances and Challenges in Multimodal Characterizations of Functional Materials

Exploring, understanding, and designing structures and functionalities of materials for energy, information and technological applications has been the main goal of materials discovery. This goal has inspired new efforts to develop integrated approaches to probe the dynamical processes of materials synthesis, as well as the evolution of structures, properties and performance of functional materials. Light-source-based X-ray methods, high flux source enabled neutron techniques and advanced (scanning) transmission electron microscopy have been tremendously developed to meet fast-growing research needs in materials science. Both electron and X-ray imaging methods provide opportunities to study functional materials in three-dimensional views in real time, in addition to providing spectroscopic information. Neutron techniques provide access to a unique range of energy/momentum space that is inaccessible to other probes. These techniques have been employed, for example, to understand physical and (electro-)chemical processes of energy materials in operation, the nucleation and growth of nanoparticles as well as various thin films, emergent phenomena and exotic physics of epitaxial heterostructures and heterointerfaces. In recent years, important developments of the spatial-temporal-energetic resolution and efficiency of these techniques have resulted in a paradigm shift for scientists in understanding the working mechanisms of functional materials at a deeper level. In addition, the big data and deep data acquired multimodal characterizations will undoubtedly stimulate multiscale modeling and simulations via high-performance computation towards the ultimate goal of materials by design.
