The Paul Scherrer Institute, PSI, is the largest research centre for natural and engineering
sciences within Switzerland. As a federal institution belonging to the domain of the
Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, we perform world-class research in three main subject areas:
Matter and Materials; Energy and the Environment; Human Health. By conducting fundamental and
applied research, we work on long-term solutions for major challenges facing society,
industry and science.

One of the main missions of PSI is to conceive, build and operate large-scale facilities.
Currently, PSI is in the unique position to offer within a single organization and on a
single site, around 40 beamlines at the Swiss muon, neutron and light sources. With the
realization of the X-ray free electron laser SwissFEL, PSI will be able to add by 2017 an
additional outstanding facility to its suite.

         The director of the Paul Scherrer Institute is looking
        for a director of the neutrons and muons (NUM) division

This division currently consists of about 228 members of staff (of which about 40% financed over
third party funding) distributed in the following units:

  *
The laboratory for particle physics; laboratory for neutron scattering and imaging;
laboratory for muon spin spectroscopy; laboratory for scientific developments and novel materials;
laboratory for mesoscopic systems and surfaces.
These five laboratories operate 27 beamlines at the neutron and muon sources. They
 support and accompany research carried out by external users as well as they perform
 their own “in-house” research.

  *
 These laboratories are complemented by the condensed matter theory (CMT) group,
 currently embedded in NUM, and the SINQ operation group. The CMT group supports experimental
 research at PSI and pursues its own research. The SINQ operation group takes care of operating
 both ultra-cold and cold (thermal) neutron sources.

Through scientific leadership and organizational skills the successful candidate will promote a world-class
experimental program aiming at supporting both internal researchers and thousands of external users.

The director of the NUM division will be member of the PSI executive board.

The successful candidate for this position will be an internationally renowned and active
scientist in a division’s field of research. He/she is expected to lead a personal research
program including acquisition of necessary funds. Furthermore, he/she will have extensive
proven leadership, management and administrative skills.
