Purpose
Supports operations of the FrontEnd (FE) ion source (FEIS) and the Low-Energy Beam Transport system (LEBT). Reconditions used ion sources and LEBTs. Maintains two spare ion source and LEBTs ready for installation in the FrontEnd. Maintains, improves, and supports the operation of the lon Source Test Stand (ISTS) and the Beam Test Facility (BTF). Supports R&D activities on the ion source test stand and BTF as time permits.

Major Duties/Responsibilities
OPERATIONS  SUPPORT
Checks proper operation of the FEIS and LEBT once per workday. Reports unusual observations and/or occurrences to supervisor.

MAINTENANCE SUPPORT
*Supports or performs scheduled maintenance tasks IS and/or LEBT on the FE, the ISTS, and the BTF.
* Supports or performs emergency maintenance to restore proper operation of the FEIS and/or LEBT after downtime causing failures (7/24 during run periods).
* Reconditions used ion sources and LEBTs and stores them under vacuum.
*Maintains and restocks assigned spares and equipment.
* Equips and maintains the ISTS and the BTF.

TESTING SUPPORT
* Supports or performs the preparation and the execution of IS and/or LEBT tests on the ISTS and the BTF.
*Supports or performs the installation of new IS and/or LEBT equipment to be tested on theISTS or the BTF.
* Supports or performs the trouble shooting of ISTS and BTF issues.
* Documents performed test and their results.

GENERAL SUPPORT
*Assists in identifying root causes of failures, weaknesses, vulnerabilities and variations.
*Assists in developing corrective actions.
*Ensures compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements including ISMS.
* Maintains a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.

Qualifications Required
Associate Degree in Engineering technologies, or equivalent combination of education and experience required. One year or more experience in an R&D laboratory is required. Experience with electrical systems, electronics, and electromechanical systems. Demonstrated ability to develop and interpret requirements and technical specifications required. Must possess strong oral and written communication skills, demonstrate good interpersonal skills, and work well in a team environment.

SCHEDULE - Spallation Neutron Source operations require the ability of this employee to be flexible in their schedule regarding weekends and 24f7 shift activity.  Some weekend and late night shift work may be required for this role.  Regular overtime and shift pay rules will apply.

This position requires some physical activity, such as carrying items, occasionally climbing ladders, etc. The selected candidate must pass a pre-hire medical physical prior to employment for this role.

This position requires Rad Worker I training.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with scientific technology, including, PLC/OIC systems, CAD mechanical and electrical design, high power RF systems, vacuum systems, and machining technology. Familiarity with plasma based systems is a plus.

Work Directions and Interfaces
Reports to the lon Source Team Leader. Interacts with personnel at all levels within the SNS.

Authority/Approval Levels:
May provide work direction/guidance to other technicians and craft personnel

Measures of Effectiveness
*Successfully performs assigned work towards success in achieving SNS research accelerator division goals.
* Successfully works and coordinates with the other ion source technicians.
* Successfully helps to create an environment in which individuals within the team can meet SNS/ORNL environmental, safety, health and quality requirements.
*Successfully reports activities and findings to his team leader and group leader
* Successfully provides the lon Source Team Leader with help, guidance and information towards establishing team policy and allocation of team resources.
