Postdoctoral Research Associate in Energy Resonance Imaging of Nuclear Materials / NB50601614

Posted Date 11/02/2016
End Posting Date 01/02/2017

Purpose
The Nuclear Security and Isotope Technology Division invites applications for a postdoctoral research position to aid in the development of the capability to perform energy resonance neutron tomography to study elemental and isotopic distributions within nuclear materials, such as advanced nuclear fuels. Specifically, energy resonance computed tomography proof-of-concept research will be undertaken to investigate the carbon distribution within TRISO microspheres and its dependence on processing parameters. Measurements will be performed at the Spallation Neutrons and Pressure Diffractometer (SNAP) beamline at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). Additionally, the ability to map uranium isotopes at SNAP and the upcoming VENUS beamline will be explored through interrogation of kernels of uranium with varied enrichment levels. The effort will include close collaboration with advanced fuel experts and a nuclear material chamber development team. The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary research team with expertise in neutron scattering, neutron tomography, uranium chemistry, advanced nuclear fuels, and inorganic materials characterization.

This position resides within the Nuclear Materials Processing Group in the Nuclear Security and Isotope Technology Division (NSITD), Nuclear Science and Engineering Directorate (NSED) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The position will involve significant collaboration with the Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). NScD operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the SNS, the world's most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to: http://neutrons.ornl.gov.

Major Duties/Responsibilities
The post-doctoral research scientist will report to Nuclear Materials Processing Group within the Nuclear Security and Isotope Technology Division and will participate in research activities using the Spallation Neutron Source primarily for, but not limited to, energy resonance imaging.

The position will support a Laboratory Directed Research and Development project titled “Time-of-flight Neutron Imaging of Nuclear Materials.” As a member of the team, the successful candidate will work with leading scientists in the development of high-resolution, 3-D neutron imaging experiments designed to study elemental and isotopic distributions in nuclear materials, such as advanced TRISO fuels.

It is expected that the candidate will be responsible for several specific project tasks that contribute to the overall goal of developing and demonstrating versatile environmental chambers that can be used to study nuclear materials with neutron tomography at the SNS. Depending on the successful candidate’s specific area of expertise, they will be responsible for planning and executing the advanced fuel study tasks or tasks related to the actual development of energy resonance computed tomography codes.

Qualifications Required
A Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or related fields completed within the last 5 years. Experience in materials irradiation or advanced fuel tomography. Proven ability through an outstanding peer-reviewed scientific publication track record to disseminate research results Strong written and oral communication skills and the desire to work in a team environment on scientifically challenging problems are required. Ability to maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics and ensure compliance with environmental, safety, health and quality program requirements. Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.

Preferred Qualifications
Expertise in advanced fuel irradiation or tomography. Hands-on experience with safe handling of radioactive/nuclear materials and glove box operation. Python programming experience
This position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days after which it will close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or hired.
