Purpose
The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor
(HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's
most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron
scattering research. Each year, these facilities carry out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials,
biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope
production and neutron irradiation. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to: http://neutrons.ornl.gov.

Major Duties/Responsibilities
The Chemical and Engineering Materials Division (CEMD) of the NScD at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a highly
motivated Instrument Scientist on the BASIS spectrometer at the SNS.
As an Instrument Scientist within Neutron Sciences, you will report to the Spectroscopy Group Leader in CEMD, and will
participate in user support, instrument development, and research activities on BASIS. Duties will include user assistance as
a local contact helping with experimental setup, data acquisition, and data analysis. You will champion developments in
instrumentation and sample environment to help maintain and further develop the performance of BASIS and its neutron
science programs. In this role you will also be expected to develop a high-quality personal research program that is well
aligned with the NScD mission. You will also be expected to publish research results in scientific journals and maintain a
strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics. You will be expected to ensure compliance
with environmental, safety, health and quality program requirements.

Qualifications Required
Candidates with a PhD and 2 or more years of relevant post-doctoral or equivalent experience in Physics, Chemistry,
Biology, or related fields will be considered. Extensive expertise in quasielastic neutron scattering is required. Strong written
and oral communication skills are required. Applicants must demonstrate an ability to work in a team environment on
scientifically challenging problems.

Preferred Qualifications
A strong record of relevant publications.
Experience with quasielastic neutron scattering technique using both backscattering and chopper neutron spectrometers.

Work Directions and Interfaces
This position will report to the Spectroscopy Group Leader in CEMD. Works closely with research staff in CEMD.
Collaborates with science programs elsewhere at ORNL.
