The Niels Bohr Institute of the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, is looking for a PhD student to investigate the behaviour of magnetically frustrated materials under extreme environments. Frustration, or the inability to satisfy all interactions, is a crucial concept in topics and phenomena ranging from nuclear spaghetti in the interior of stars and protein folding in life science to understanding the structure of common water ice. This project focuses on magnetic frustration, a field rich in exotic phenomena derived from emergent behaviour such as magnetic monopole excitations, fractionalisation and hidden multipolar order. In particular, the goal of this project is to investigate the effects of applying high pressure to magnetically frustrated materials that exhibit these unusual emergent behaviours, such as the spin ices and the garnets. How does pressure affects the exchange interactions and ordering tendencies at low temperatures?

A new neutrons source, the European Spallation Source (ESS) is being constructed in Lund, Sweden. Neutrons are the natural tool to investigate magnetic correlations. This project, funded by Nordforsk grant “Magnetic Frustration Under Pressure”, aims to build up the Nordic neutron scattering competence ahead of the ESS. Three graduate students will be hired within the project and they will be situated at Oslo University, KTH, Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm and Copenhagen University (with links to ESS). The advertisement for the positions at Oslo University and KTH, Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, will also shortly be opened.

The responsibility of the student hired at the University of Oslo with Prof. H. Fjellvåg, will be sample growth and characterization, while the second student, hired at KTH with Prof. P. Henelius, will focus on theoretical calculations of the neutron structure factor from magnetically frustrated materials. This advertisement concerns the third student who will be hired at the University of Copenhagen, and whose field of responsibility will be magnetic characterization, neutron scattering and analysis of data from the frustrated samples under low temperatures, and high pressures.

Applications can be made online: http://www.nbi.ku.dk/Jobs/phd-scholarship-in-frustrated-magnetism/
The deadline is the 29th January 2017.

A suitable background for this position would be a Master of Science in Physics or equivalent with a specialization in condensed matter physics. Good knowledge of experimental physics is important, and exposure to low temperature techniques could be helpful. Experience with scientific programming and data analysis is very desirable. Neutron scattering experience is a clear advantage, but not a prerequisite. In addition to the traditional academic merits, a relevant degree project and international experience are regarded as advantageous qualifications.

Applicants must be strongly motivated for doctoral studies, possess the ability to work independently and perform critical analysis as well as possessing good levels of cooperative and communicative abilities. The main criterion for selection will be the research potential of the applicant and the above mentioned skills. The successful candidate will then be requested to formally apply for enrolment as a PhD student at the PhD school of Science.
