Purpose
The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor
(HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's
most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron
scattering research. Each year, these facilities carry out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials,
biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope

Major Duties/Responsibilities
The Chemical and Engineering Materials Division (CEMD) of the NScD is seeking a highly motivated instrument scientist to
join the Directorate's neutron imaging program. With the advent of instruments such as the HFIR CG-1D cold imaging
beamline, it has now become possible to obtain high-spatial resolution 2- and 3-dimensional neutron imaging data from
myriad advanced materials. Information about the CG-1D facility, including publications and research highlights, can be

The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary instrument-based research team with expertise in neutron scattering,
energy materials, engineering materials, and materials chemistry. This person will participate in research activities using
primarily CG-1D, and is also expected to develop a high-quality personal research program that is well aligned with the NScD
mission. The candidate will also contribute to the on-going development of a time-of-flight imaging program, currently
utilizing BL-3 at the SNS, in preparation for VENUS a dedicated future imaging beamline at the SNS. Information about

The Instrument Scientist will report to the Engineering Materials Group Leader in CEMD, and will participate in research
activities using CG-1D, primarily for, but not limited to, neutron radiography and computed tomography for materials research
applications.
Other duties and responsibilities include:
* Conducts safe operation and user support for the beamline, which includes user assistance as local contact, assistance
with experimental setup, data acquisition, data analysis, and publications.
* Champions developments in instrumentation, sample environment, and software to help maintain and further develop the
imaging program and expand its user base.
* Develops a high-quality personal research program using primarily neutron scattering, work to strengthen existing
academic and industrial user collaborations and to create new collaborations, publish research results in scientific journals
* Maintains a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.
* Ensures compliance with environmental, safety, health and quality program requirements.
* This position supports programs and facilities at HFIR that are operational 24 hours a day and seven days a week. This
role will require flexibility in work schedule, and support will be needed during off duty hours and weekends, in many cases,
to assist with user experiments.
Qualifications Required
Candidates with a Ph.D. in Materials Science, Engineering, Physics or related disciplines will be considered. Experience in
neutron and/or x-ray imaging and computer analysis/programming/modeling using Python or an equivalent programming
language such as MatLab is required. Strong written and oral communication skills and the desire to work in a team
environment on scientifically challenging problems are required. Experience in software reconstruction, 2D and 3D image
visualization and quantitative data analysis is required. A strong record of publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals is
required and candidates must have the ability to develop an independent science program using the above techniques (a
research plan should be supplied to demonstrate this).
Qualifications Desired:
* Preference will be given to candidates with previous beamline support experience in a neutron and/or synchrotron x-ray
central facility.
* Experience with industry-related problems such as Additive Manufacturing (AM), development of engineering materials,
fossil fuel and renewal energy technologies is desired.
* Experience with neutron instrument simulations using Monte Carlo based software (e.g. McStas and/or MCNP-X) is
preferred.
* Ability to work with other technical and scientific support groups to advance sample environment, data reduction and data
analysis for neutron imaging.
Work Directions and Interfaces
This position will report to the Engineering Materials Group Leader in CEMD. Works closely with research staff in CEMD and
programmers in the Neutron Data Analysis and Visualization Division and other support groups. The candidate will also be
expected to coordinate with the Industrial Application Program at the Shull Wollan Center and collaborates with science
programs elsewhere at ORNL.
