We are seeking an outstanding figure in research and teaching in this field. The starting date is April 1st 2018. In a joint procedure with Forschungszentrum Jülich, RWTH Aachen University is seeking to appoint an internationally respected scientist to the chair (W3) of the Institute of Crystallography. The successful candidate will also head the newly established institute JCNS-3 at Forschungszentrum Jülich dedicated to Neutron Analytics for Energy Research. The appointee should build a bridge between methodologically oriented research in neutron scattering and basic materials research for energy technology. Access to the neutron instruments operated by JCNS will facilitate the development of methods, for example with respect to in situ and in operando studies. The advertisement therefore addresses internationally respected researchers with major interests in the methodology of neutron scattering as well as in research on energy materials. We are seeking a general commitment to materials-related research activities at the Faculty of Georesources and Materials Engineering of RWTH Aachen University, and in particular to the Division of Earth Sciences and Geography, participation in the relevant profile areas of RWTH Aachen University, as well as collaboration with the Institute of Energy and Climate Research at Forschungszentrum Jülich. The ability to head an institute, fulfil the role of professor, and acquire third-party funding is essential. It is expected that the successful candidate will continue and further develop the teaching duties of the chair, which provides basic and advanced courses in the science and engineering teaching of the faculty in crystallography, crystal physics, crystal chemistry, and structure research by means of X-ray and neutron diffraction. A Ph.D. degree is required; additionally, Habilitation (postdoctoral lecturing qualification), an exemplary record of research achievement as an assistant / an associate / a junior professor or university researcher and/or an outstanding career outside academia are highly desirable. Ability in and commitment to teaching are essential. The application should include supporting documents regarding success in teaching. German is not necessary to begin but will be expected as a teaching language within the first 5 years.

Applications in English should be sent with the usual documentation (CV, copies of certificates, list of publications, teaching experience, brief summary of previous research activities including a list of third-party funding, research concept for the position advertised) to:

Dekan der Fakultät für Georessourcen und Materialtechnik der RWTH Aachen, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Axel Preuße, 52056 Aachen.

You can also send your application via email to dekanat at fb5.rwth-aachen.de<mailto:dekanat at fb5.rwth-aachen.de>. Please note, however, that communication via unencrypted e-mail poses a threat to confidentiality as it is potentially vulnerable to unauthorized access by third parties.

The deadline for applications is March 29th, 2017.

Part-time employment may be possible upon request. RWTH Aachen University and Forschungszentrum Jülich have been certified as family-friendly and also offer dual career programmes. We particularly wish to promote women’s careers and therefore welcome applications from female candidates. Applications from women will be given preference in the case of equal suitability, qualifications, and experience, unless special personal reasons concerning a male candidate outweigh these considerations. Applications from suitable candidates with disabilities are explicitly encouraged.
