[Neutron] Instrument Scientist Position for HEIMDAL at ESS

Researcher/Senior Researcher for Instrument (HEIMDAL) Design and Construction at the European Spallation Source

Aarhus University (AU<http://www.au.dk/>) in Denmark is contributing to the European Spallation Source ESS in Lund, Sweden, by leading the construction of the combined neutron powder and small angle scattering instrument HEIMDAL. In this connection the Department of Chemistry at Aarhus University offers a fixed-term position as researcher or senior researcher (Instrument Lead Scientist at ESS) for a total of 4 years. The intended starting date is 1st of October 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The Department of Chemistry at Aarhus University (chem.au.dk<http://www.chem.au.dk/>) is in terms of scientific impact one of the leading European chemistry departments with research programs that range from medicinal chemistry to theoretical chemistry. It has a permanent staff of 27 full and associate professors, a support-staff of ~25 people, ~150 PhD-students and postdocs, and more than 500 students.

The European Spallation Source (ESS, www.esss.se<http://www.esss.se/>) is a multi-disciplinary research center based on the world’s most powerful neutron source. This new facility will be up to 100 times brighter than today's leading facilities, enabling new opportunities for researchers in the fields of life sciences, energy, environmental technology, cultural heritage and fundamental physics. When fully operation the facilities is expected to have more than 400 staff members and some 2000-5000 visiting researchers are expected every year

Description of work:
The mission is to supervise the design, and define the scientific scope of the neutron instrument HEIMDAL at ESS. The long term goal is to become Instrument Responsible, once the instrument has moved into the operations phase. The Instrument Lead Scientist will work closely together with the Instrument Lead Engineer forming an instrument team. The Instrument Lead Scientist and Instrument Lead Engineer, together with a core team of specialists from the instrument consortium at ESS in Lund will define the scientific specifications of the instrument. The Instrument Lead Scientist provides scientific project leadership, including defining scope scientific and initial hot commissioning experiments. He/she must also be active in a scientific program on the leading edge in the field of materials science.
