*Investigation of Multiferroic Skyrmion Systems*
*Duration: 3.5 years, Stipend base level: $26,800 p.a.*

We are seeking two outstanding and enthusiastic PhD candidates at the
University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney for the groups of A/Prof.
Jan Seidel in the School of Material Science and Engineering and A/Prof.
C. Ulrich in the School of Physics.
The aim of the project is the study of topological spin systems, i.e.
skyrmions in bulk single crystals as well as thin films. Skyrmions are
chiral spin structures at the nanometer scale that currently receive
tremendous attention as they offer a plethora of fascinating phenomena
for fundamental research and future technological applications. The
project involves growth and characterization of the related materials as
well as their investigation by optical spectroscopy, neutron scattering,
x-ray synchrotron techniques, as well as atomic force microscopy.
Facilities for the growth of thin film samples using pulsed laser
deposition and single crystals using an optical travelling solvent
floating zone furnace are available at UNSW. Experiments using optical
spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy will be conducted in the groups
of A/Prof. C. Ulrich and A/Prof. J. Seidel at the UNSW, respectively.
Neutron scattering and x-ray synchrotron scattering experiments will be
performed at ANSTO in Sydney and at the Australian Synchrotron in
Melbourne as well as at overseas research facilities.
Stipend supplements up to $7,500 p.a. are possible for exceptional
candidates.

profile journals.

* We are looking for candidates with a strong background in condensed
matter physics.
* Experience in one or more of the above mentioned techniques would be
an advantage.
* Ability to work in a dynamic international team.
