About the position

We are seeking a suitably qualified Electronics Engineer / Physicist to work within our Data Acquisition Electronics (DAE) team specialising in neutron detector systems.

The Electronics Engineer / Physicist will be responsible for specifying, integration, commissioning of new detector systems and fault finding and repair of the detectors systems installed on the neutron beam instruments. In addition, the position requires specifying, designing and manufacturing of the electronic hardware and software for the related detector data acquisition readout systems.

Reporting to the Manager, DAE Systems the successful candidate has a background in engineering, computing or physics and has excellent communication skills. The successful candidate will be able to integrate and work within the DAE team and provide a dedicated client focus.  The ideal candidate is an engineer or a physicist with a broad scientific background and some experience in complex system and possibly detectors physics and or electronic engineering. The ideal candidate will bring her/his own knowledge and work experience. Considering the scope and diversity of detectors employed by ACNS neutron beam instruments, the ideal candidate will be willing and open to learn in a fast paced environment. In addition, project management skills will be considered as an advantage.


Duties and responsibilities


  *   Advise on detector related issues, devise tests to check and improve performances.
  *   Maintain operation of neutron detectors, electronic hardware and software and embedded data acquisition systems for all operational instruments in a 24x7x300 environment. Fault finding, diagnosis and repair.
  *   Develop data acquisition software and firmware that integrates into the ACNS instrument control system.
  *   Perform factory and site acceptance tests of new and replacement detector systems   and install and commission on the neutron instruments at ACNS.
  *   Create, revise and update source code, documentation (user manual, design manual, troubleshooting guides, and maintenance procedures), drawings and issue tracker to ensure instrument configurations and issues are accurately documented as per the ACNS Quality System under standard ISO9001.
  *   Ensure a client focus is maintained by working together with the instrument scientists who manage and operate the neutron instruments.
  *   Work with other detector and electronic engineers within ANSTO research infrastructure platforms particularly Australian Synchrotron and Centre for Accelerator Science to assist with the development and maintenance of systems including approaches to standardisation



Skills and Experience


  *   Degree in Bachelor of Engineering in electronics or Bachelor of Science in computing and/or physics and/or mathematics.
  *   Experience in the use and/or calibration and/or design of neutron or X-ray detectors and/or related/similar systems
  *   Experience in electronic engineering of data acquisition systems using FPGA based hardware, computing hardware and software and networking.
  *   Experience (5-10 years for more senior candidates) in developing VHDL or Verilog code, and C/C++ code for device control, in the use of issue tracking and version control and writing processes for calibration, repairs and maintenance.

  *   Specify, design develop, commission and maintain hardware, firmware, embedded software, test software and acquisition software for data acquisition electronics for neutron detection on our neutron scattering instruments.
  *   Create, revise and update source code, documentation (user manual, design manual, troubleshooting guides, and maintenance procedures), drawings and issue tracker to ensure instrument configurations and issues are accurately documented as per the ACNS Quality System under standard ISO9001.
  *   Troubleshoot, investigate and resolve issues raised by instrument scientists in operations and identify and coordinate support from other team members and engineering disciplines when required.
  *   Manage ACNS engineering projects in accordance with the ANSTO project manual and ACNS procedures and use project management techniques to ensure that project scope, schedule, budget and risk are controlled
  *   Ensure activities and solutions comply with regulatory and statutory requirements.
  *   Work with other detector and electronic engineers within ANSTO research infrastructure platforms particularly Australian Synchrotron and Centre for Accelerator Science to assist with the development and maintenance of systems including approaches to standardisation
