Job Title: Team Leader, Neutron Optics and Instruments Development
Requisition ID 2908
Overview:
The Neutron Technologies Division within the Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is looking for a team leader for the Neutron Optics and Instruments Development Team within the Instrument Methods, Projects and Technologies Group. The mission of this team is to develop devices, techniques and methods enabling new capabilities, to participate in the design and commissioning of new instruments, and to provide operational support of these new capabilities at instruments in the user program. Our research interests fall into these areas: developing new neutron polarization techniques, Larmor labeling methods, and developing new instrument concepts.

In this position you will lead a team of scientists and students who develop such technology and new ideas for new and upgraded instruments at ORNL's neutron sources. This includes the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) where new instruments will be constructed both at the First Target Station (FTS) and the Second Target Station (STS). You will work with neutron instrument scientists and engineers who will lean on your expertise in finding solutions for their scientific or engineering requirements.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  * Lead the Neutron Optics and Instruments Development Team within the Instrument Methods, Projects and Technologies Group. Line manager of individual team members.
  * Provide technical oversight (subject matter expert) for the project to upgrade the cold neutron guides at HFIR.
  * Lead the operation of the cold neutron optics test beam line at HFIR.
  * Contribute to the development of new instrument concepts and instrument upgrades at HFIR, FTS and STS.
  * Pursue an individual program of high-quality scientific research that uses the neutron scattering instruments at ORNL.
  * Publish results in scientific journals, conference proceedings and ORNL technical reports as appropriate.
  * Ensure and monitor compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements. Promptly identify ESH and QA issues and communicate them to project and division management, ESH and QA contacts, and/or subcontractor contacts as appropriate.
  * As a member of the ORNL scientific community, you will be expected to commit to ORNL's Research Code of Conduct. Our full code of conduct, and a statement by the Lab Director's office can be found here: https://www.ornl.gov/content/research-integrity<javascript:void(0);>.

Basic Qualifications:

  * Ph.D. in physics, chemistry, materials science, or a closely related discipline.
  * A minimum of 10 years of practical research experience using neutron scattering techniques.
  * A general understanding of neutron scattering instruments (elastic, inelastic), their scientific requirements, and neutron optical transport technology.
  * Ability to articulate and formulate a vision for a team of research scientists and technicians working toward one common goal.
  * Demonstrated success in working with a multi-disciplinary team in a dynamic research environment.
  * A strong record of scientific publication.
  * Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  * Practical experience with neutron polarization devices: supermirrors, 3He filters, Heusler monochromators.
  * Experience with Monte Carlo/ray-tracing methods for neutron scattering conceptual instrument design.

Other Requirements:
Please provide a list of publications when applying for this position. If you are selected for interview, you will be required to submit a minimum of 2 letters of recommendation.

About Neutron Sciences Directorate:
The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor-based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's most intense pulsed accelerator-based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope production and neutron irradiation. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to http://neutrons.ornl.gov<javascript:void(0);>.

Benefits at ORNL:
UT-Battelle offers a quality benefits package, including a matching 401(k), contributory pension plan, paid vacation, and medical/dental plan options. Onsite amenities include a credit union, medical clinic, cafeteria, coffee stands, and fitness facilities.

Relocation:
Moving can be overwhelming and expensive. UT-Battelle offers a generous relocation package to ease the transition process. Domestic and international relocation assistance is available for certain positions. If invited to interview, be sure to ask your Recruiter (Talent Acquisition Partner) for details.
