Call for Proposals<https://www.ansto.gov.au/our-facilities/australian-centre-for-neutron-scattering/call-for-proposals> at ANSTO’s Australian Centre for Neutron Scattering<http://www.ansto.gov.au/acns/> (ACNS) and National Deuteration Facility<http://www.ansto.gov.au/ndf> (NDF) – Round 2022-1

UPDATE: The ACNS & NDF 2022-1 proposal round deadline has been extended to 15 February 2022 (for instrument time from July 2022) due to the significant experimental backlog that has been created as result of the COVID lockdown in Sydney.

Submission Deadline: 15 February 2022, for instrument time between July and December 2022

Proposals must be submitted on-line at: http://portal.ansto.gov.au/

Important Changes:

  * The user portal has been transitioned to the ANSTO Research Portal (ARP)<https://portal.ansto.gov.au/> and you will need to create a new account in the ARP if you do not already have an account in the ARP. Please refer to the ACNS & NDF ARP user guide<https://www.ansto.gov.au/media/4451/download/>.
  * ANSTO is undertaking an Anonymised Review Trial<https://www.ansto.gov.au/anonymised-review> which requires users to comply with the requirements outlined on the Anonymised Review Trial<https://www.ansto.gov.au/anonymised-review> webpage. We encourage you to participate in one of the information sessions which will be run every Wednesday up to the proposal deadline (see the Anonymised Review Trial<https://www.ansto.gov.au/anonymised-review> webpage for full details).

Small-angle X-ray scattering<https://www.ansto.gov.au/user-access/instruments/other-instruments-and-services/small-angle-x-ray-scattering-instruments> and X-ray reflectometer<https://www.ansto.gov.au/user-access/instruments/other-instruments-and-services/small-angle-x-ray-scattering-instruments/x> (in conjunction with Quokka<http://www.ansto.gov.au/quokka>, Bilby<http://www.ansto.gov.au/bilby>, Platypus<http://www.ansto.gov.au/platypus> or Spatz<http://www.ansto.gov.au/spatz>)

Sample environment equipment<https://www.ansto.gov.au/user-access/instruments/other-instruments-and-services/sample-environments> available for use on the neutron-beam instruments (Sample environment equipment handbook<https://www.ansto.gov.au/media/4447/download>)

Physical Properties Measurement System<https://www.ansto.gov.au/physical-properties-measurement-system> (only in collaborative mode with ANSTO staff)

NDF is open for proposals for Biological<https://www.ansto.gov.au/our-facilities/national-deuteration-facility/instruments/biodeuteration> and Chemical<https://www.ansto.gov.au/user-access/instruments/deuteration/chemical-deuteration> Deuteration
Enquiries can be emailed to: ndf-enquiries at ansto.gov.au<mailto:ndf-enquiries at ansto.gov.au>

For NDF users who wish to receive their deuterated or isotopically labelled molecules in the first half of 2022 (January-June) for experiments which can be performed during this period, please contact NDF via ndf-enquiries at ansto.gov.au<mailto:ndf-enquiries at ansto.gov.au> to discuss further.

Proposal Types – “ACNS & NDF 2022-1” Round

ACNS

  * For single visit proposals for ACNS neutron instruments, select “Normal”
  * For 3-year program proposals for ACNS neutron instruments, select “Program Proposal – Neutron”

NDF

  * For proposals for NDF deuteration and/or multiple isotopic labelling capabilities (for non-neutron applications or overseas neutron experiments), select “Deuteration”
  * For 3-year program proposals for NDF deuteration and/or multiple isotopic labelling capabilities (for non-neutron applications or overseas neutron experiments) select “Program Proposal - Deuteration”

Combined ACNS & NDF

  * For single visit proposals for ACNS neutron instruments which require synthesis of deuterated molecules by the NDF for the proposed experiments, select “Deuteration / Neutron”
  * For 3-year program proposals for ACNS neutron instruments and NDF deuteration capabilities, select “Program Proposal – Deuteration / Neutron”

Other Important Information:

  * It is probable that international travel restrictions<https://covid19.homeaffairs.gov.au/travel-restrictions> to visit Australia will remain in place until Mid-2022, which will restrict international users from participating in approved experiments. ANSTO will consider running ACNS experiments in mail-in mode (where feasible) or alternatively Australian collaborators could attend ANSTO and run your experiment for you. Where experiments are undertaken as mail-in, costs including sample mailing and importation fees will be charged back to users.
  * Applicants should ideally discuss their proposal with the appropriate ACNS Instrument Scientist and/or NDF scientist before submitting.
  * Mail-in proposals can be submitted continuously using the Legacy ACNS Portal (https://neutron.ansto.gov.au/) for the following ACNS capabilities:
     *   Powder Diffraction on Echidna<https://www.ansto.gov.au/user-access/instruments/neutron-scattering-instruments/echidna/services-echidna>
     *   Small-Angle Neutron Scattering on Quokka<https://www.ansto.gov.au/research/user-office/instruments/neutron-scattering-instruments/quokka/services>
