Requisition Id 9684
Overview:
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a Target Systems Mechanical Design Engineer for the Second Target Station (STS) project. The STS is a >$1Billion, Department of Energy project to be constructed at the ORNL Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). The STS will provide wholly new capabilities for the study of a broad range of materials with neutron scattering and support thousands of users from the physical, materials, and applied sciences and industry. The science capabilities provided by the instrument suite at the STS will complement those of the two existing DOE Office of Science neutron scattering user facilities at ORNL, the First Target Station (FTS) of the SNS and the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR). The STS will deliver the highest peak brightness of cold neutrons in the world, which together with advances in neutron optics, instrumentation, and detectors, will ensure US leadership in neutron scattering for decades to come.
The STS Target Systems group is responsible for the design, fabrication, installation, and testing of all hardware necessary to convert the incoming 700 kW, 15 Hz proton bean into 22 beams of moderated neutrons.
Job Description:
The STS Target Systems Mechanical Design Engineer participates in and contributes to the design and integration of the Target Systems scope. The Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for providing detail drawings, design specifications, procurement support, installation support, and testing support for the assigned portion of Target Systems scope under the direction of a senior or lead engineer. If selected, you will report to the STS Target Systems Interface Systems Group Leader and will interface with engineers, scientists and other designers across and outside the project.

* Communicates and collaborates with engineers, designers, scientists and vendors throughout the design process, and assists senior or lead engineers with team coordination and management of deliverable timelines
* Participate in R&D and prototyping of proposed equipment and systems
* Contribute to various project document types, including but not limited to:
* 3-D CAD models and hardware drawings using CREO
* Interface control documents between Target Systems scope and other technical scope in conventional facilities, accelerator systems, instrument systems, and integrated control systems
* Requirements documents
* Design and Analysis Calculations (DACs)
* Technical Specifications
* Statements of Work (SOW)
* Installation Plans

* Experience with drawings, schematics and P&IDs, including codes and standards such as Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
* Familiarity with Creo for CAD design. Experience with other CAD packages may be considered in lieu of Creo experience.
* Experience designing systems for operation in an accelerator or nuclear environment
* Experience working in an interdisciplinary team environment with engineers and other designers working together on large (thousands to ten thousand+ parts and subassemblies) assemblies
