Requisition Id 9685
Overview:
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a Target Systems Piping and Mechanical Designer for the Second Target Station (STS) project. The STS is a >$1Billion, Department of Energy project to be constructed at the ORNL Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). The STS will provide wholly new capabilities for the study of a broad range of materials with neutron scattering and support thousands of users from the physical, materials, and applied sciences and industry. The science capabilities provided by the instrument suite at the STS will complement those of the two existing DOE Office of Science neutron scattering user facilities at ORNL, the First Target Station (FTS) of the SNS and the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR). The STS will deliver the highest peak brightness of cold neutrons in the world, which together with advances in neutron optics, instrumentation, and detectors, will ensure US leadership in neutron scattering for decades to come.
The STS Target Systems group is responsible for the design, fabrication, installation, and testing of all hardware necessary to convert the incoming 700 kW, 15 Hz proton bean into 22 beams of moderated neutrons.
Job Description:
The STS Piping and Mechanical Designer is responsible for development of designs for Target Systems components, many of which are first of a kind or one of a kind. Specifically, the candidate will be responsible for the design of piping systems and components. The Designer produces high quality engineering design packages. The successful candidate will collect and maintain records, technical drawings and documents for STS Target Systems. This role reports to the STS Target Systems Interface Systems Group Leader and interfaces with engineers, scientists and other designers across and outside the project. The STS Piping and Mechanical Designer will be responsible for reviewing and checking the work of peer designers and draftsmen.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
* Takes complex engineering designs from conception through manufacture and build, specializing in piping systems
* Successfully communicates and collaborates with engineers and scientists throughout the design process
* Creates engineering models and drawings using a computer-aided design (Creo, Spec-Driven Piping 3-D CAD) graphics workstation
* Produces multi-system installation drawings and specifications
* Prepares clear, complete and accurate working plans and detail drawings from layouts, rough or detailed sketches and from written or verbal instructions
* Checks detail drawings to assure compliance with engineering codes and drafting standards
* Works with the Document Control Center to help ensure accuracy and completeness of drawings
Basic Qualifications:
* Associates degree in an engineering or scientific discipline. An equivalent combination of education and design experience may be considered instead of an AS degree
* A minimum of five years of experience in design of complex piping and mechanical systems
* At least two years of experience using Creo/Pro-E for the design of piping systems. Extensive experience with other CAD packages may be considered in lieu of Creo/ProE experience.
* Knowledge of the technical concepts of drafting and engineering principles, codes, and standards
* Working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
* Ability to communicate design concepts through presentations to engineers and other designers
Preferred Qualifications:
* Experience working in an accelerator or nuclear environment
* Expert level knowledge of GD&T
* Extensive experience with Creo skeletons and top down design
* Experience working in a team environment with engineers and other designers working together on large (thousands to ten thousand+ parts and subassemblies) assemblies
* Experience with schematics, PFDs and P&IDs
* Experience in weldment design and American Welding Society (AWS) symbology
* Experience in communicating with vendors and fabricators
Work Direction and Interface:
Position reports to the STS Target Systems Interface Systems Group Leader. Takes direction from and supports the work of Target Systems Lead Engineers. Collaborates with engineers, scientists and other designers internally and externally.
Authority/Approval Levels: Creates, checks and issues design packages and resolves technical fabrication issues with vendors. Leads, directs or coordinates with other designers to meet major project objectives. May mentor junior designers.
Measures of Effectiveness:
* Successfully develops high quality engineering designs and drawing packages
* Successfully interacts with designers and engineers to develop ideas into workable engineering solutions
* Effectively manages very large Creo assemblies
* Promotes a high-quality design culture through application of STS Engineering standards and best modeling practices
This position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days after which it will close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or hired.
We accept Word (.doc, .docx), Adobe (unsecured .pdf), Rich Text Format (.rtf), and HTML (.htm, .html) up to 5MB in size. Resumes from third party vendors will not be accepted; these resumes will be deleted and the candidates submitted will not be considered for employment.
