Dear all,
I would like to make you aware of an open letter addressed to the UK’s Research and Innovation CEO and the Executive Chair of the Science and Technology Facilities Council. These organisations are responsible for the funding of ISIS Neutron and Muon Source.
Recently, it was announced that the STFC will face significant budget cuts. This letter makes the case for continued strong support for the UK's central research facilities, including the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source.
Please feel free to read the letter, which is linked here: https://stfc-open-letter.co.uk (we have heard about some issues accessing the letter from certain University networks; if you cannot access it, please try on a mobile phone).
To maximise the impact of the letter, we are aiming to gather as many signatories as possible from across the UK community. Therefore, if you are a user of UK-funded facilities or have collaborations within UK-based research programmes that rely on these facilities, we would be grateful if you would consider signing and sharing this letter widely.
We'll send the letter on 2 April, so please act quickly.
If you would like more context, I wrote a blog article on the subject a few weeks ago (https://mccluskey.scot/2026/03/09/the-hidden-cost-of-stfc-cuts.html).
Thanks
Andrew
