Self-assembled macromolecular structures on the nanometer scale are the
foundational elements of cellular and extracellular biomatter. Examples
range from the self-organization of lipid-based biomembranes to
functional protein/lipid nanoglobules in biological liquids.
Understanding their functions requires insights into structure and
dynamics at near-physiological conditions. We investigate well-defined
models systems and native biomatter with various neutron scattering
techniques (small-angle and quasi-elastic neutron scattering as well as
reflectometry) to obtain structural information that is inaccessible
otherwise and yields insights into functional aspects of biomolecular
assemblies. This seminar talk covers studies on the influence of
glycolipids on membrane interactions [1] and mechanics [2] and on the
architecture of the prey capture slime of velvet worms in bulk [3] and
when in contact with hydrophobic ("prey-like") surfaces.
