ISIS Instrument Scientis Position - Prisma

	STAFF SCIENTIST - ISIS FACILITY

	Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Oxfordshire

	

	ISIS is the world's most intense source of pulsed neutrons and
muons, providing research facilities for condensed matter science. PRISMA is
a crystal-analyser spectrometer designed to measure coherent structural and
magnetic excitations in single crystals. It also offers a diffraction
capability for studies of diffuse and critical scattering.

	

	An enthusiastic and highly motivated scientist is required for a
staff position on the PRISMA neutron spectrometer at the ISIS Facility. The
post entails (1) supporting the experimental programme on PRISMA and
interacting with the user community, (2) development work to upgrade the
spectrometer, and (3) driving a strong science programme making use of
PRISMA and other instruments in the ISIS suite. To this end, the successful
candidate will already be expert in one of the existing fields of research
performed on PRISMA (which include magnetism, lattice dynamics, phase
transitions and critical phenomena, and the dynamics of disordered materials
and complex systems such as minerals). He/she will be expected to actively
pursue these scientific interests and to extend the science base on PRISMA
to innovative new areas.

	

	A PhD in one of the relevant physical sciences is essential, and
experience of postdoctoral research and/or inelastic neutron scattering is
desirable. A flexible approach to working hours will be required.

	

	The post will be available for up to 5 years in the first instance,

	The salary range is between £18,620 & £28,246, depending on
experience. Progression within the salary range is dependent upon
performance. A non-contributory pension scheme and a generous leave
allowance are also offered.
