An excellent opportunity exists in the theoretical and experimental study of
the deformation of materials.  Developments in neutron and synchrotron
radiation experiments have provided a unique probe of the deformation of
materials at a microstructural level.  Recent parallel advances in
theoretical techniques allow the study of the deformation of multi-phase
materials, twinning, and phase transformations (e.g. shape memory materials)
under applied thermo-mechanical loads.

The post is a joint appointment between CCLRC and the University of
Manchester.  It will be based at the ISIS neutron source at the Rutherford
Appleton Lab., but will include extended stays at the Stress and Damage
Characterisation Unit of Manchester University as well as Los Alamos
National Lab. USA.  The applicant should have a PhD in physics, materials
science or engineering.  Experience in any of the following areas would be
an advantage; stress mechanics, analytic or numerical modelling,
diffraction, metals deformation.  An ability to communicate well in English,
work as part of a team, and produce written reports is also required.

The appointment will be for a fixed term of 3 years.  The salary range is
between £18,620 and £24,327 depending on relevant experience (pay award
pending), with fixed yearly increments. For further details about the post,
