Post Doc Position: Neutron scattering techniques for engineering
applications at HFR
APPLICATION DEADLINE 31 AUGUST 2004
Number
NET 1 (valid for nationals of the 10 new EU member states and candidate
countries)
Title/subject
Neutron methods development in support of structural integrity assessment of
nuclear safety related components
Type of grant
Cat 30
Description of the subject
While neutron beam applications have been developed and extensively used in
fundamental and applied research throughout the last half century, it is
only in the last two decades that these methods have been recognized as
excellent means for advanced engineering applications and in particular in
structural integrity assessment. In fact, Small Angle Neutron Scattering
(SANS) is a well-established method for materials damage investigation. The
HFR SANS facility is currently undergoing upgrading in order to facilitate
irradiation damage investigations.
The overall aim of the project is to train researchers in the application of
advanced neutron techniques (SANS, neutron diffraction) on damage and
residual stress characterization. The trainee will contribute to the design
and execution of test campaigns, facilities upgrading, including
installation of velocity selector in place of monochromator, cold neutron
source, and relevant standardization activities in the frame of the NET
European Network (Network on Neutron Techniques Standardization for
Structural Integrity).
The candidate should be well familiar with and have solid experience in
diffraction techniques, if not specifically neutron diffraction. The major
focus of this task will be the development of the SANS method in support of
thermal ageing and irradiation damage investigations in steel alloys at the
HFR-Petten.
