SNS Neutron Scattering SCIENTIST


 

 

The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) Project at the Oak Ridge National
Laboratory invites applications for a Neutron Scattering Scientist.  The
U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science has funded the design and
construction of the SNS, which will provide the most powerful
next-generation short-pulse spallation neutron source in the world for
neutron scattering and related research in broad areas of the physical,
chemical, materials, biological, and medical sciences.  The SNS is a
partnership among six DOE national laboratories (Argonne, Brookhaven,
Jefferson, Lawrence Berkeley, Los Alamos, and Oak Ridge), and is
scheduled for completion in 2006.

 

Successful candidate will contribute to the physics design of the VULCAN
diffractometer and other neutron scattering instruments at the SNS and
participate in the commissioning of various instrument components as
they arrive, also contributes to the development of novel optics
components. 

 

Responsibilities include: reviewing current designs, identifying upgrade
needs, evaluating new design options, and testing instrument components
as they arrive; participating in commissioning of the VULCAN and other
neutron scattering instruments; interacting with SNS instrument
scientists and advises on the neutron optical design of their
instruments;  conceiving such designs and conducts prototype tests as
needed;  conducting scientific experiments in collaboration with members
of the user community and publishes results in scientific journals;
ensuring compliance with environmental, safety, health, and quality
program requirements.

 

Required qualifications are: Ph.D. in Physics or related discipline,
plus 5 years experience involving focused Bragg reflection neutron
optical devices or equivalent combination of training and experience is
required; familiarity with engineering diffraction and deformation
sciences and with various types of neutron optical components is
desired; strong written and oral communication skills and the desire to
work in a team environment on technically challenging problems are
required.

Neutron Scattering Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Laboratory invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in
the Instrument Systems Group.  The U.S. Department of Energy Office of
Science has funded the design and construction of the SNS, which will
provide the most powerful next-generation short-pulse spallation neutron
source in the world for neutron scattering and related research in broad
areas of the physical, chemical, materials, biological, and medical
sciences.  The SNS is a partnership among six DOE national laboratories
(Argonne, Brookhaven, Jefferson, Lawrence Berkeley, Los Alamos, and Oak
Ridge), and is scheduled for completion in 2006.

 

The Neutron Scattering Postdoctoral Research Fellow conducts independent
research using neutron scattering as a primary research tool, and
assists the design and construction of the VULCAN diffractometer at the
SNS. 

 

The incumbent will be a temporary SNS employee.  The term is for 2
years, renewable for the third year pending on funding and mutual
agreement.  The incumbent will conduct independent research on
deformation and phase transformation behaviors in advanced materials,
using neutron scattering as a primary tool.  Typical work will involve
design and execution of scattering experiments.  Frequent travel to
neutron scattering facilities is expected.  In addition to materials
research, the incumbent will also have an opportunity to contribute to
VULCAN, a state-of-the art engineering diffractometer under construction
at the Spallation Neutron Source.

 

A Ph.D. in materials science, materials engineering, physics, or a
related field is required.  Solid knowledge in physical metallurgy is
essential.  Candidates with expertise in deformation behaviors and/or
phase transformation of nano materials are particularly welcome, and
those with strong characterization or processing skills are encouraged
to apply.  Previous experience in neutron or X-ray scattering techniques
is a plus.  Strong written and oral communication skills and the desire
to work in a team environment on scientifically challenging problems are
required.
