Post doctoral Fellow (f/m) in
Ion Coordination and Interlayer Water Structure in Clay Minerals
The function
The project is in the frame of a wide collaboration between the Intitut Laue Langevin (Grenoble, France),
the Laboratoire de Géophysique Interne et Techtonophysique (CNRS and Université Joseph Fourier,
Grenoble, France), the Agence National pour la Gestion de Déchets Radioactifs (ANDRA, France),
INE-Karlsruhe (Germany) and the University College of London (London, UK). It is aimed to study
the hydrophobic interaction of anions-actinide ion pairs with clay minerals, and surface induced
redox reactions, as a way to determine the capability of charged and uncharged clay minerals for
trapping radioactive contaminants. Several experimental techniques will be employed to tackle the
problem, mainly Neutron Diffraction with Isotopic Substitution, conducted at the ILL High Flux Reactor
(Grenoble), and XAS conducted both at ESRF (Grenoble) and INE (Karlsruhe).
The post-doc fellow will be in charge of data collection and reduction to obtain a description of the
water environment around these ions and their interaction with the clay layers. The study should be
complemented by numerical simulations which will help interpreting the interaction of these aqua ions
with mineral surfaces.
Qualifications and Experience
A PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Geochemistry or a related discipline is required. Previous experience
using neutron or X-ray radiation, working in environmental issues and/or knowledge on numerical
simulations would be appreciated. Excellent communication skills in English will be also appreciated.
The candidates should provide curriculum vitae, list of publications and at least two names of potential
referees.
The Offer
The post-doc fellow will be employed for a period of 12 months with a net salary of 1900 € per month
plus 10% at the end of the contract. The contract will start before May 2005 or as soon as a suitable
candidate is found.
Deadline: February 28th, 2005 (a decision will be made by the end of March 2005).
