We invite applications for a postdoctoral position at the Berlin Neutron
Scattering Center BENSC of the Hahn-Meitner-Institut Berlin. The
Hahn-Meitner-Institut is a German National Laboratory and a member of
the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of National Research Centres (HGF)
and has about 600 employees. It hosts the Berlin Neutron Scattering
Center (BENSC) (http://www.hmi.de/bensc/), a user facility open to
scientists from all over the world. To probe the structure and dynamics
of condensed matter, BENSC provides the national and international
research community with state-of-the-art neutron scattering equipment
and expertise. 30% of the beam time at BENSC is reserved for in-house
research.
This position is open to post-doctoral candidates who hold a Ph.D.
degree in chemistry, material science, physics, or an engineering
discipline and have a strong research interest in condensed matter
physics, neutron or X-ray scattering techniques. The ability to carry
out independent research, to develop new techniques and instruments,
experience with Monte Carlo simulations will be important assets.
The department SF1 (Methods and Instruments) successfully operates the
Time-of-Flight (TOF) spectrometer NEAT (see http://www.hmi.de/bensc/).
The innovative instrument development program at BENSC aims at further
enhancing the capabilities of the instruments. Initial work associated
with the position will focus on optimization of neutron optical
components, including the neutron guide and chopper system, with the
help of state-of-the--art numerical simulation software tools. The work
will further include the development of a large position sensitive
detector system, data acquisition and visualisation.
The successful candidate will also participate in the research work
associated with spectrometer NEAT in the framework of the BENSC user
program. She/he will also conduct her/his own research program in the
field microscopic dynamics and functionality of nanostructured materials
for energy transport and storage, primarily using neutron scattering
techniques.
The appointment is for 3 years. Applicants should send a letter of
application, a detailed CV, a list of publications and copies of degrees
to Hahn-Meitner-Institut Berlin, Abt. Personal und Soziales, Glienicker
Str. 100, D-14109 Berlin, Germany, quoting reference NO. SF2007/17
(email: personalabteilung at hmi.de). The deadline for applications is 15
September 2007.
