The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 24 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for 2,000 visiting scientists. Chemical and Engineering Materials Division (CEMD) invites applications for the position of an instrument scientist for the POWGEN powder diffractometer. The position will be either permanent or three year fixed term, depending on level of experience. The successful candidate will be part of the diffraction group, providing operational support for the POWGEN diffractometer and is expected to develop a vigorous scientific program associated with the instrument and the Chemical and Engineering Materials Division's science thrust areas.

Major duties and responsibilities:

*             Will work with POWGEN Instrument team to provide user support for  (This will include helping users to develop user proposals, conduct experiments, and analyze data)

*             Will collaborate with other staff and research groups at ORNL to conduct world-leading research using POWGEN and other instruments at ORNL

*             Will work with the POWGEN team to conceive, plan, and execute upgrades of the instrument.  This will include both hardware and software

*             Will take part in development of new methods to advance neutron powder diffraction, data reduction and analysis

*             Will ensure compliance with environmental, safety, health, and quality program requirements including ISMS

*             Will maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of laboratory values and ethics

Qualifications required:
A Ph.D. and a minimum of two years of experience as a Research Scientist in material science, physics, chemistry, or related fields, or equivalent combination of training and experience are required. Strong written and oral communication skills and the desire to work in a team environment on technically- and scientifically-challenging problems are required. Candidates with a current research program in diffraction and/or crystallography will also be given preference. Experience with instrument development, instrument support, software and programming development, particularly at a neutron or x-ray synchrotron facility, is highly desired. Software and programming skills for object-oriented and specific diffraction problems are a plus.
