Purpose
The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 24 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope production and neutron irradiation. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to: http://neutrons.ornl.gov.<http://neutrons.ornl.gov/>
Purpose:
The Instrument and Source Division invites applications for a Scientific Associate. The role of the Scientific Associate is to establish and maintain robust and reliable operations of neutron scattering instruments at a facility that operates 24/7 during periods of neutron production and are cognizant of operational parameters and equipment and provide front line operational support to the scientific programs conducted on those instruments. The Scientific Associate will develop and maintain beam line operations by optimizing operations procedures, practices, and user manuals, and instill a safety-minded operations oriented culture among instrument team members.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

--Coordination of the user experiment including: scheduling, training users in the operation of the instrument and orient them to the physical lay-out of the instrument and surrounding areas, and communicating all information and requirements necessary for a successful experiment
--Maintain and manage current inventory of all samples associated with experiments performed on the assigned instrument in accordance with policy.
--Work with the sample environment group to schedule equipment required for individual experiments. Be fully trained on such equipment so as to provide normal operations support during the course of an experiment.
--Request corrective maintenance as necessary and provide feedback on equipment performance.
--Coordinate the installation and integration of instrument upgrades needed to improve operations.
--Maintains effective communications with all SNS customers and users, including accelerator groups and instrument scientific staff to ensure responsive and high quality instrument operations.

Must have some knowledge and/or experience in optimization of scientific equipment. Candidates must have demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills. The candidate must be able to work independently, respond

to emergencies in a timely manner, and utilize sound judgment when making decisions. The ability to perform hands-on work
to troubleshoot, diagnose, and debug technical equipment and systems is required as well as having a mechanical aptitude.

Qualifications Desired:
--A Bachelor's degree in science or engineering and 5 or more years of relevant work experience in a field related to their degree.
--Experience in neutron scattering instrument support or a closely-related scientific or technical field.
--Enjoys working in a team environment, with the collaboration of all levels, disciplines, and diverse cultural backgrounds of the organization.
--Demonstrated ability in problem solving and analysis in a technical setting.
--Experience analyzing, troubleshooting, and optimizing scientific and electro mechanical equipment and devices.
--Demonstrated experience in coordination of technical tasks and resources.

Work Directions and Interfaces
