Purpose
The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 27 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences. HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope production and neutron irradiation. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to: http://neutrons.ornl.gov.<http://neutrons.ornl.gov/>

The Quantum Condensed Matter Division (QCMD) of NScD, ORNL operates 13 instruments for elastic and inelastic neutron scattering studies of materials. Instruments are located at both the HFIR and the SNS. The QCMD conducts research on materials with emergent properties that are manifestly quantum in origin. Some examples of current interest include superconductivity, multiferroicity, low dimensional and frustrated magnetism, orbital fluctuations, topological materials and quantum criticality.

QCMD invites applications for staff positions as an Instrument Scientist with an emphasis on research utilizing inelastic neutron scattering. The successful applicant is expected to join one of the Triple Axis or Time of Flight Spectroscopy groups of QCMD, and will be assigned to one or more instruments.

The level of the position offered will depend on the experience and qualifications of the candidate.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

- Work as part of the Triple Axis or the Time of Flight group
- Maintain the assigned instrument, coordinate with support groups to ready the instrument for each user experiment, and act as a local contact for external user experiments
- Collaborate with other staff and research groups at ORNL and elsewhere to conduct world-leading research using the instrument, as well as related instruments at ORNL
- Act as a team member to conceive, plan, and execute hardware and software upgrades of the instrument
- Collaborate in the development of new methods for scattering measurements and interpretation of the data
- Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, health, and quality program requirements
- Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of laboratory values and ethics

* The duties of this position require certain health standards be met and therefore, is contingent upon the results of a
pre-employment physical exam and drug screen.
Qualifications Required

- A Ph.D. in the Physical Sciences is required
- A demonstrated record of research accomplishments and expertise in inelastic neutron scattering
- Must have a desire to work in a team environment within a multi-disciplinary team on technically and scientifically challenging problems
- Must be self-motivated and must demonstrate strong written and oral communication skills

Qualifications Desired:
- A Ph.D. in the Physical Sciences plus 2 or more years of relevant postdoctoral experience is desired
- A strong background in experimental hard-condensed matter physics and a proven track record in neutron scattering research is desired
- Experience with inelastic neutron scattering using triple axis and/or chopper spectrometers is highly desired
- Experience with instrument support, in particular working with users at a large neutron or x-ray synchrotron user facility would be advantageous
Employment Status
Full-Time
This position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days after which it will close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or hired.

We accept Word(.doc, .docx), Excel(.xls, .xlsx), PowerPoint(.ppt, .pptx), Adobe(.pdf), Rich Text Format(.rtf), HTML(.htm,
