Post-Doctoral Fellowships - Canadian Neutron Beam Centre

25-02-2014
Chalk River, Ontario, Canada

About the Location:

AECL Nuclear Laboratories, located at Chalk River, Ontario is the
premier research institution and the knowledge base of the Canadian
nuclear industry. The unique nuclear facilities and science and
technology capabilities of the Nuclear Laboratories are applied to
ensure Canadians and the world receive energy, health, environmental and
economic benefits while assuring nuclear safety and security.

Operating within AECL Nuclear Laboratories, at the NRU reactor, the
Canadian Neutron Beam Centre (CNBC) operates six neutron scattering
instruments as an international user facility. The NRU reactor is a
medium-flux, multipurpose thermal-neutron source that operates at
approximately 100 MW. Each year, about one hundred neutron scattering
projects are undertaken, supporting the R&D programs of more than two
hundred research participants from industries, government laboratories
and academia from across Canada and abroad. Over the past five years,
CNBC research participants included more than 700 individuals from over
60 departments in about 30 Canadian universities and from over 100
foreign institutions in over 20 countries. While users and clients are
welcome from across the spectrum of physics, chemistry, materials
science, life science and engineering, the CNBC has developed special
strengths and collaborative networks in selected areas, including:

*         thermo-mechanical deformation of materials;

*         solidification and crystallographic phase transitions;

*         residual stresses in engineering components;

*         structures and dynamics in quantum materials;

*         hydrogen storage materials;

*         thin magnetic films and multilayers;

*         membrane biophysics; and

* electrochemistry and corrosion at surfaces.

More information about the CNBC and the Canadian neutron-scattering
community can be found at www.neutrons.ca and www.cins.ca, respectively.

About the Position:

The Post Doctoral Fellow will work directly with the CNBC team,

subject-matter expertise will serve as mentor and functional supervisor.
Research topics will be established jointly between the candidate and
the mentor. Science and technology outcomes are expected to be published
in leading international peer-reviewed journals and scientific or
technological conferences. Successful candidates will be provided an
annual stipend of $55K + 4% in lieu of vacation. The duration of the
fellowship is for two years, renewable for a third year subject to
satisfactory performance and availability of funds.

Eligibility:

engineering.

*         English-language proficiency is essential.

Conditions:

Candidates will be assessed for security clearance to access Controlled
Area 2 at Chalk River, as a condition of offer of a post-doctoral
fellowship.

The working environment includes the main floor of the NRU nuclear
research reactor, which entails industrial hazards as well as radiation
hazards. The candidate will be trained in safe practices in a radiation
environment.
