The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences. The Diffraction Group in the Chemical and Engineering Materials Division (CEMD) of the NcSD operates single crystal and powder diffraction instruments addressing a range of problems in chemistry and materials research. Areas of research supported by the group include the structure and behavior of electrical energy storage materials and systems, fundamentals of structure under pressure and/or temperature conditions, and the effects of processing conditions on material performance. The Diffraction group in CEMD has one immediate opening for a postdoctoral position focused on studying battery and Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) materials. The candidate is expected to develop in-situ neutron cells for battery research and continue developing a science program based on in-situ characterization of battery and SOFC materials. As a member of the
POWGEN team, responsibilities will include using a combination of materials synthesis, electrochemical characterization, and diffraction to study electrochemical energy storage materials. With the advent of instruments such as POWGEN it has now become possible to obtain high-precision structural parameters, often comparable to those from single crystals in short counting times. Neutron scattering studies will be performed at the various world class instruments at the SNS and HFIR.
The candidate will also have access to the state of the art materials chemistry laboratory for materials synthesis and electrochemical characterization and have the opportunity to collaborate with staff at Chemical Sciences Division (CSD), Material Science and Technologies Division (MSTD) and Energy and Transportation Sciences Division (EESD). The successful candidates will join an interdisciplinary research team with expertise in neutron scattering, nanoparticle synthesis, thin film growth, materials chemistry, inorganic materials, fuel cell, and battery materials. This candidate will also have the opportunity to work with users of the POWGEN diffractometer, where research interests are aligned.
- Develop (with POWGEN instrument team) in-situ cells to study battery materials.
- Carry out materials synthesis and electrochemical characterization.
- Publish scientific papers resulting from this research and present results at appropriate national and international meetings.
- Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements.
- Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.
- Physical requirements for this job include the use of hand and eye protection gear, kneeling, sitting for extended periods of time, working with sample environment equipment, and possible exposure to ionization radiation normally associated with operation of neutron scattering instruments for scientific research.
A Ph.D. in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, or other related science field is required. Applicants must have received their PhD within five years of this application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. Candidates should be self-motivated, have good interpersonal, communication and presentation skills and a demonstrated ability to interact effectively with colleagues at all levels. The ability to work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team is a critical asset.
Employment is contingent upon the results of a pre-employment physical exam and drug screen which must be administered and cleared before employment can begin.
Previous experience in neutron and/or X-ray diffraction and expertise in synthesis and structural characterization of solid oxide fuel cell and battery materials and other characterization using various electrochemical probes such as cyclic voltammetry, conductivity, TGA, etc. Experience with microscopy related techniques are desirable
