Purpose
US ITER is a ten year, ~$4 Billion, Department of Energy multi-laboratory project that executes the US contributions to ITER
for the US, which is a non-host partner in the seven-member international collaboration to design and construct, in France, a
fusion device aimed at establishing the scientific and technological feasibility of fusion energy. On the Web:

Purpose:
The US ITER Vacuum Systems Group Leader works with the Non-Nuclear Systems Division (NNSD) Director, Project
Manager, Deputy Project Manager, Chief Engineer, Nuclear Systems Division Director and WBS Team Leads to manage and
lead the US ITER Vacuum Systems Group. The US ITER Vacuum Systems Group will provide the design and procurement
basis for all the ITER Tokamak vacuum systems and equipment for US ITER contributions. Activities will span R&D, design,
fabrication, testing and delivery of vacuum systems equipment in accordance with specific requirements of the ITER
organization.
Major Duties/Responsibilities
-- Responsible for managing of US ITER Vacuum Systems Group, including execution of vacuum scope, and definition of
required resources and schedule for each US ITER in-kind contribution.
-- Develops and manages in a timely manner the budget plans for the Vacuum Systems Group. The Vacuum Systems Group
currently consists of approximately 15 staff members; with a Line-Item budget of approximately $110M over the life of the
construction project. Group size will vary throughout the project duration depending on project phase.
-- Develops annual work plans and manages the implementation of those plans.
-- Responsible for hiring of Subject Matter Experts within the Vacuum Systems Group and evaluating their performance
towards achieving required goals.
-- Works with the ITER Organization in development of the ITER Tokamak Vacuum Systems detail designs. Overall
responsibility includes design, research and development, acquisition, fabrication, acceptance testing and delivery of
equipment to the ITER site.
-- Tracks progress of Vacuum Systems Group towards achieving planned milestones.
-- Completes and executes in a timely manner the periodic performance evaluations for Vacuum Systems Group members in
the direct employ of US ITER / UT-Battelle. Contributes to performance evaluations for team members that are matrixed to
the project.
-- Develops and implements professional development of staff.
-- Coordinates preparations for, presentations at, and responses to, external technical reviews and advisory committees.
-- Ensures US ITER Vacuum Systems comply with ITER Organization standards and requirements. .
-- Ensures and leads Group and individual compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.
-- Maintains a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.
Qualifications Required
Successful candidate will have a Bachelor's Degree (or higher) in science or engineering, 8 years of experience in design,
building, and testing vacuum hardware for large-scale R&D or industrial facilities. Excellent written and verbal
communications skills are required. Must have experience managing a project having a multi-organizational, collaborative
work environment (e.g. managing teams from multiple institutions or national laboratories).
Must be available for foreign and domestic travel. Must be able to attend remote conferencing during non-standard work
hours.
Qualifications Desired:
Preferred candidate will have a Master's Degree (or higher) in science or engineering, 12+ years of experience in design,
building, and testing vacuum hardware for large-scale R&D or industrial facilities, and 5 years' experience in leading or
supervising teams responsible for vacuum systems.
Work Directions and Interfaces
Reports to Director, Non-Nuclear Systems Division. Schedules, assigns and directs the tasks of engineers and designers
within the Vacuum Systems Group. Interfaces with vendors, engineering personnel within NNSD and the US ITER project
and personnel at the ITER headquarters in France. Authority/Approval Levels:
Acts as WBS Team Lead for US ITER Vacuum Systems. Provides work direction to Control Account Managers (CAM's) and
group members within guidelines established by the NNSD Director.
Measures of Effectiveness
-- Successfully manages technical areas within the WBS
-- Successfully manages CAM's
-- Successfully monitors and tracks budget and schedule
-- Successfully reports progress in a timely manner to NNSD Director and Project Manager
-- Successfully manages procurement and fabrication activities of the engineering components for the Vacuum systems
-- Successfully ensures that the fabrication activities follow the US ITER QA plan and fabrication procedures.
-- Successfully creates an environment in which individuals within the group can meet US ITER/ORNL environmental, safety,
health and quality requirements; and successful enforcement of these requirements
