Purpose
The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor
(HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's
most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering
research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical
sciences. HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope production and neutron irradiation. To learn more about Neutron

The Experiment Engineer acts as the primary resource for instrument scientists and scientific associates for component level
modifications to the neutron scattering instruments at the High Flux Isotope Reactor.

Major Duties/Responsibilities
Translate experiment requirement from the instrument scientists into engineering design requirements.
-Develop accurate design criteria from scientific staff and collaborate with appropriate staff for instrument and sample
environment modifications
-Identify appropriate engineering level and discipline required to complete work successfully
-Develop design specifications to ensure integration across systems

Design of small-scale improvements and upgrades to neutron scattering instruments
-Create working model conceptual designs using SolidWorks or appropriate CAD software
-Develop detailed designs leading to fabrication drawings
-Design diverse, complex components used in neutron shielding
-Use advanced knowledge to solve complex problems in mechanical design

Installation of new equipment
-Provide technical direction to craft and technicians in the field
-Guide work of other engineers and technical staff
-Identify hazards associated with working on the neutron scattering instruments and develop engineering controls to -mitigate
these hazards.

Provide technical direction for work performed in the neutron scattering experiments machine shop
-Translate experiment requirements from the instrument scientists to clear instructions presented to machinists
-Direct work flow and establish priorities for the experiment machine shop
-Design and maintain common tooling to enhance experiment efficiency.
-Perform technical reviews on systems modifications to ensure design requirements are met

Qualifications Required
B.S. degree in mechanical engineering and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience. Must be able to independently
apply problem-solving techniques to a variety of complex technical problems. Competent judgment of engineering problems
is required. Must demonstrate advanced knowledge in materials for neutron absorption, mechanical design (e.g. use of
machine elements such as bearings, gears, springs and cams).
This position is a Workplace Substance Abuse Program (WSAP) testing designated position which requires passing a
pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in which employees are subject to
being randomly selected for testing and undergoing testing without advance notification. The occupant of this position will
also be subject to an ongoing requirement to report any drug related arrest or conviction or receipt of a positive drug test
result to the Company.

Preferred Qualifications
-Familiarity with work activities in a nuclear reactor operating environment and proficiency in technical writing skills are
desired.
-Ability to communicate effectively across scientific and engineering disciplines is important.
-Professional certification in SolidWorks Associate is desired.
-Experience maintaining and operating neutron scattering sample environment equipment and/or neutron scattering
Instruments

Work Directions and Interfaces
This position reports directly to the HFIR Neutron Scattering Experiments Group Leader and is expected to interface with
personnel in the Neutron Sciences Directorate and at all levels within ORNL. Act as mentor to junior staff.

Authority/Approval Levels:
Provides work direction to craft, machine shop staff, technicians

Measures of Effectiveness
-Positive feedback from staff scientists and users
-Improvements to instrumentation are simple to use and robust design
-Successfully leads work activities to safe and efficient completion
