Purpose
The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor
(HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's
most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering
research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical
sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists. HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope production and neutron
irradiation. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to: http://neutrons.ornl.gov.
The Accelerator Physics, Beam Instrumentation and Ion Source Group in the Research Accelerator Division (RAD) has an
immediate opening for a post-doctoral research associate. Applications are sought from creative and motivated individuals
who will participate in the development and research program in beam instrumentation for the SNS accelerator systems. This
research is expected to be done in a team environment on technically and scientifically challenging problems. A significant
amount of effort will be devoted to improving the performance and availability of the existing beam instrumentation systems.
Note: The special combination of skills and experience that will be developed in this role may be needed at SNS for future
full time staff opportunities.
Major Duties/Responsibilities
Participate in development, design, installation and commissioning of new Beam Loss Monitors system.
Develop novel signal measurement and processing methods for new and existing beam instrumentation systems.
- Support obsolescence mitigation program for the SNS beam instrumentation by leading design efforts for new detectors
and analog electronics development for various beam instrumentation systems.
- Publish scientific papers on this research
- Present scientific results at appropriate national and international conferences
Qualifications Required
A Ph.D. in experimental physics or electrical engineering, or other related science fields is required. Applicants must have
received their PhD within five years of this application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their
appointment.
Qualifications Desired
Preference will be given to candidates with experience in accelerators for charged beams, charged particles detectors, beam
instrumentation, design of printed circuit boards, design of low power analog electronics and programming in LabView.
Strong written and oral communications skills are preferred.
Work Directions and Interfaces
Interfaces with Physicists, Engineers and Technicians to define and design system upgrades and new systems.
Reports to BIET team leader
Measures of Effectiveness
- Maintains a safe working environment at all times.
- Makes sure Beam Instrumentation Systems support SNS operation with required availability
- Meets milestones for development of Beam Instrumentation Systems.
