Data Curation Software Engineer
The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Data Curation Scientist or Data Curation Software Engineer
position at the Data Management and Software Centre in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Description of directorate/division/group
The ESS Data Management and Software Centre (DMSC) is responsible for the design, development and operation of the software and hardware to be used for the data acquisition, processing, analysis and curation for experiments to be carried out on the neutron scattering and imaging instruments at ESS.
The mission of the Data Management Group is to deliver the critical real time data streaming and recording infrastructures that make experiments at ESS possible and to provide the catalogues, databases and automatic processing capabilities that enable visiting scientist to effectively use their scattering data.
To meet this objective, we will utilize development effort and expertise from ESS in Lund and Copenhagen staff and in-kind contributing partners from other facilities collaboratively developing open source packages for use at large scale facilities.
The Job description
The Data Management Group delivers critical software infrastructures that make neutron scattering experiments at the ESS possible and successful. One aspect of that is to provide the data catalogue and automatic processing capabilities that enable visiting scientist to effectively make use of their scattering data. In the current construction phase this work is led by the Swiss Paul Scherrer Institute as and in kind contribution to ESS.
The task for this position is to participate in the development of a data curation (data cataloguing) system that captures metadata about raw and processed experimental data and makes that information available to scientists in a form that is useful to them in their domain of expertise. Central parts of that system will be developed using the Angular web framework and a NOSQL database (MongoDB). The development happens in a collaborative, open source environment.
In particular, the role is to:
• Develop software for ESS scientific operations
• Coordinate the development of software frameworks data processing and cataloguing by:
o Gathering specific requirements for software functionality and the deployment platforms
o Work with project partners and support them in their development efforts
The role is both suitable for candidates from a scientific background intending to move into a more software focused career as well as for trained software developers with an interest in science.
Qualifications
M.S. in Computer Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, etc. or equivalent work experience.
Experience with two or more of the following technical or scientific areas:
• Web technologies and frameworks
• Databases
• Message brokers
• GNU/Linux based operating systems
• Automatic testing and deployment infrastructures
• Data Management for experimental raw and derived data
• Metadata ontologies for experimental data
• Persistent identifiers (DOIs, PIDs)
An ideal candidate has a track record of software development in larger scientific and / or technical projects in an object-oriented language. You should be able to work effectively and responsibly in large, diverse teams. Good communication skills both oral and written are required. It would be a plus when you master another European language in addition to English.
