Purpose
The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor
(HFIR), the United States' 9ighest flux reactor-based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's
most intense pulsed accelerator-based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron
scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and
medical sciences. HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope production and neutron irradiation. To learn more about

The Neutron Scattering Division (NSD) in the Neutron Sciences Directorate at ORNL operates 30 instruments to study a
diverse range of materials using elastic and inelastic neutron scattering, small angle neutron scattering, neutron reflectometry
and neutron imaging techniques. Instruments are located at both HFIR and SNS. Scientific research areas include quantum
materials, soft matter and polymers, catalysis and interfacial chemistry, materials and engineering, biological materials and
systems and applications of computing, modeling and data analytics to analysis of neutron scattering data. This is an
excellent opportunity to join an interdisciplinary team that performs experiments, high performance computing, and theory.
The Neutron Scattering Division has immediate openings for one or more postdoctoral associates to work on scientific
projects using neutron scattering in the Spectroscopy, Diffraction, Large Scale Structures, or Materials Engineering groups.
These positions represent an excellent opportunity to carry out materials research using neutron scattering in a stimulating
multidisciplinary environment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Major Duties/Responsibilities
* Develop outstanding science and innovative technologies to further understanding and applications of materials science
and materials engineering.
* Publish scientific papers resulting from this research and present results at appropriate national and international meetings.
* Develop scientific methods and innovative technologies that further the capabilities of the neutron scattering user program.
* Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements

Qualifications Required
Basic Qualifications:
* Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Applied Physics, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering or related
discipline.
* Good interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
* Demonstrated ability to communicate research results in peer-reviewed publications.
* All degree requirements must be complete before the appointment can begin, and your application should be within five
years of receiving your doctorate degree.

Preferred Qualifications:
* Self-motivated
* Excellent communication and presentation skills
* Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with colleagues at all levels and in multi-disciplinary teams

The date of your application must be within 5 years of the most recent degree, and all degree requirements must be complete
before starting the appointment. Certain exceptions may be considered. This position is a temporary, full-time assignment for
24 months. 3rd year extensions may be approved based upon performance, funding, and urgency for further research.
