Postdoctoral Research Associate in Neutron and X-ray Scattering
Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Materials Science and Technology Division
Scattering and Thermophysics Group
PURPOSE:
We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will focus on neutron and x-ray scattering measurements of the structure and dynamics of nuclear fuel related materials to elucidate the mechanisms underpinning thermal transport. This position resides in the Scattering and Thermophysics Group in the Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
OVERVIEW:
The position is available immediately as part of the Center for Thermal Energy under Irradiation (TETI), a new (August 1, 2018) Energy Frontier Research Center funded by the US Department of Energy (https://science.energy.gov/bes/efrc/). The mission of this Center, which is headquartered at Idaho National Laboratory (INL), is to advance the science of phonon and electron mediated thermal transport in advanced nuclear fuels. The successful applicant will be expected to work effectively with scientists at ORNL, INL, and other partner institutions (Purdue, Columbia, Ohio State, U. of Central Florida, Air Force Research Lab). The successful applicant will also be expected to work effectively with scientists at neutron and x-ray scattering national user facilities such as the Spallation Neutron Source (ORNL) (http://www.ornl.gov/user-facilities/sns), the High Flux Isotope Reactor (ORNL) (http://neutrons.ornl.gov/facilities/HFIR/), and the Advanced Photon Source (Argonne National Laborotory) (http://www.aps.anl.gov). The general scientific focus will be on using neutron and x-ray scattering measurements of the structure and dynamics of nuclear fuel related materials to elucidate the mechanisms underpinning thermal transport. This work will be done in collaboration with theory and transport measurements carried out at partner institutions.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
* Conduct neutron and x-ray scattering experiments (e.g., lattice dynamics, crystal structure, disorder and thermal diffuse scattering, data analysis, and some modeling).
* Work with others to maintain a high level of scientific productivity.
* Present and report research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
* Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
* Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
* A PhD in materials science, physics, engineering, or a related discipline completed within the last five years
· The ability to communicate in English to an international scientific audience is required.
* The incumbent must be motivated, safety conscious, and possess good interpersonal skills and oral and written communication skills.
* Possession of a record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences.
*
PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS:
* Training and/or experience in neutron or x-ray scattering and some understanding of materials theory may help.
* Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative and frequently interacting teams of researchers.
Other Information:
Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.
Please provide a list of publications when applying for this position. Three letters of reference are required and can be uploaded to your profile or emailed directly to PSDrecruit at ornl.gov. Please include the title of the position in the subject line.
WORK DIRECTION AND INTERFACES: Position reports to the project manager and interfaces with administrative staff, managers and visitors to ORNL.
